Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Hospital

The transition from the South Side Oncology Clinic to the private pavilion at Northwestern Memorial Hospital took less than six hours. By noon the next day, Emma’s mother, Clara Foster, was resting in a private suite on the sixteenth floor, overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan. The room looked like a five-star hotel, complete with a private nurse, a plush velvet sofa, and a kitchen stocked with organic juices and fresh fruit.

Emma stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, her ribs securely bound in a medical brace under a soft cream-colored sweater Dante had provided. She watched her mother sleep—the first peaceful, deeply rested sleep Clara had experienced since the diagnosis.

"She looks better already," a deep voice said from the doorway.

Emma turned to see Dante standing there, holding a massive bouquet of white orchids. He was flanked by Leo, who remained out in the hallway like a silent sentinel.

"How did you do this?" Emma asked, her voice cracking with an emotion she couldn't entirely control. "The director of the hospital came down personally to greet us. He said the billing was handled by a private foundation. Mr. Moretti... this costs hundreds of thousands of dollars."

"Money is just paper, Emma. It has no value unless it’s buying something that matters," Dante said, walking over to place the orchids on the bedside table. He looked down at Clara's frail form. "The specialists here have access to a new immunotherapy trial from Switzerland. The success rate is over eighty percent. Your mother is going to live."

Emma covered her mouth with her hands, the tears finally breaking through her defenses. She wept silently, her shoulders shaking as the sheer, exhausting weight of the last two years finally began to slide off her back. She had spent so long being the only pillar holding up her fractured family, expecting the roof to collapse on her head at any second.

Dante didn't hesitate. He stepped across the room and pulled her gently into his chest. He was careful of her bruised ribs, his strong arms forming a protective cage around her that felt completely impenetrable.

"It’s over, Emma," he murmured into her hair. "The bills are paid. The house on 47th Street has been cleared out. You are never going back to that dark room."

"But Jake..." she sniffled against his cashmere sweater, her voice full of lingering fear. "He’ll find out about the hospital. He has friends in the police."

"Jake Vance is no longer a factor in this universe," Dante said, his tone carrying a chilling finality that left no doubt as to the man's fate. "And his uncle was arrested by federal marshals two hours ago on conspiracy and racketeering charges. The pipeline is broken. The dogs have been put down."

Emma looked up into his dark eyes, searching for the cold mob boss everyone in Marello’s had been terrified of. She found him, but beneath the stone façade, there was an old, burning ember of a boy who had survived the slums and sworn to rewrite the laws of the street.

"You’re a dangerous man, aren't you?" she whispered.

"Only to the people who deserve it," Dante replied, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "To you, I’m just the man who ordered the 2010 Barolo."
