Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Vault

The concrete trench beneath the cemetery smelled of damp earth and old copper wiring. Emma didn't stay above ground; despite Dante's warning, she scrambled down the iron ladder behind him, her linen dress tearing slightly against the rusted metal. She wasn't going to let him fight a ghost alone.
The corridor opened into a vaulted room that looked like a Cold War command post. Racks of server blades hummed against the walls, their green and blue LEDs casting a eerie light across the space.
In the center of the room, a man in a pristine silver suit was frantically typing on a portable console, trying to force the auction initialization sequence through before the system was compromised. It was The Architect—a pale, middle-aged man with sharp features and gold-rimmed glasses that were currently slipping down his nose with sweat.
Dante reached him before he could hit the final sequence.
With a roar, Dante grabbed the man by the collar of his expensive suit and threw him across the room. The Architect crashed into a rack of server equipment, a shower of sparks raining down as several hard drives shattered on impact.
"Stop! Stop!" The Architect shrieked, holding his hands up as Dante advanced on him, his boots crunching through the glass and debris. "If you kill me, the system defaults to a public release! It’s a dead-man’s switch!"
Emma rushed to the central console, her eyes scanning the complex code running across the primary screen. "He’s telling the truth, Dante! The script is hard-coded into the main frame. If his heartbeat or terminal access drops for more than two minutes, the server uploads the raw data files to twenty different mirror sites on the dark web."
Dante stopped, his boot resting heavily on The Architect's chest, pinning the data broker to the floor. "Can you stop it, Emma?"
"I need the master decryption key," Emma said, her fingers blurring over the keys as she tried to isolate the upload loop. "It’s a twenty-four-character alphanumeric string. He’s the only one who has it."
Dante leaned down, his face inches from The Architect's glasses. The cold fury radiating from him made the data broker shake so violently he could barely breathe. "The key," Dante whispered. "Give it to her, or I will personally ensure that your heartbeat drops to zero in a way that takes hours."
"It's... it's in the ledger," The Architect gasped, pointing a trembling finger toward an old, steel lockbox bolted to the wall beneath the main server rack. "The original microform documents... the key is printed on the first page of the index."
Emma ran to the box, using the crowbar Dante had dropped from his tactical belt to wedge the door open. The metal groaned and gave way, revealing a thick, leather-bound volume with a gold emblem on the cover: The Red Syndicate Registry—1984.
She tore the book open, her eyes finding the index page. Printed in red ink across the top was the authorization string.
"I have it," Emma cried out, typing the characters into the terminal with a precision that defied the adrenaline pumping through her system.
The countdown timer on the screen froze at exactly 00:00:03.

The red dots on the map of the institute turned green, one by one, before the entire terminal screen went black, replaced by a simple, definitive prompt:
