Chapter 4 - The Reopening of Table Seven

The dark interior of The Grand Verona smelled of stale dust, old velvet, and unpolished silver. The grand restaurant, once the playground for the city’s corrupt elite, had been closed since the night of Julian’s arrest. The crystal chandeliers overhead hung like frozen icicles in the gloom, catching the faint glimmers of moonlight that filtered through the boarded-up street windows.

Emma stood in the center of the main dining room, wearing a stunning, emerald-green silk dress that Dante had chosen for her. The vibrant color was a deliberate statement—a visual armor that screamed life against the dead grey of the abandoned restaurant.

Dante stood behind the grand mahogany bar, checking the cylinder of his revolver before sliding it into the shoulder holster beneath his tailored black suit jacket. The silence in the room was heavy, suffocating, punctuated only by the distant hum of the city traffic outside.

"Are you sure about this, Emma?" Dante asked, his eyes scanning the dark corners of the room. "You don't have to be the bait. I can hunt him through the alleys without exposing you to this space again."

"No," Emma said, walking over to the circular table in the far corner—Table Seven. She placed her hand on the dusty white linen cloth. "This is where he stripped me of my dignity, Dante. Every time he raised his voice, every time he gripped my arm under the table while the guests pretended not to see... it happened right here. If I don't face him here, a part of my mind will always be trapped in this room. I need to see him break where he thought he broke me."

Dante walked out from behind the bar, his hand reaching out to touch her cheek, his thumb trailing along her jawline. "He won't touch you, Emma. My men are stationed in the kitchen and the wine cellar. The moment he steps through that door, the perimeter closes."

A sharp, metallic click echoed from the back of the restaurant.

The service door that led to the alley slowly creaked open, a thin beam of street light cutting through the darkness of the dining room. A silhouette stepped into the frame—tall, impeccably dressed in a dark wool coat, his hair neatly combed back despite his weeks on the run.

It was Julian.

He walked into the dining room with a slow, theatrical stride, his leather shoes clicking against the marble floorboards. His face was slightly gaunt, a faint, red scar tracing across his temple from the transport crash, but his eyes were filled with the same manic, delusional grandiosity that had terrorized Emma for years.

"Exquisite," Julian said, clapping his hands together softly, the sound hollow in the empty room. "Truly exquisite, Emma. I must admit, I didn't think the Italian thug had the taste to dress you so well. Emerald suits you. It’s the color of money—the money you stole from my family trust."

Dante stepped in front of Emma, his hand moving smoothly inside his jacket, his body presenting a solid wall of defense. "You're a dead man walking, Vance. The state police are combing the gorge, but I think they’ll find your actual body right here on the marble."

Julian laughed, a sharp, bitter sound that degenerated into a cough. "Oh, Dante. You think you’re a mafia king because you control a few rusty docks and a crew of illiterate dockworkers? You’re a provincial criminal. I’m a corporate master. Look out the window."

Through the cracks in the boarded windows, the sudden, rhythmic flash of red and blue police lights began to illuminate the dusty room. The heavy wail of sirens cut through the night air, accompanied by the squeal of multiple vehicles surrounding the building.

"I didn't come here alone, Dante," Julian sneered, pulling a satellite phone from his pocket. "I called the federal judicial task force an hour ago. I gave them the exact coordinates of your private villa and the manifests of the illegal weapons shipments you’ve been running through the north terminal. Right now, your empire is being dismantled by the Department of Justice. And as for you... you're currently holding a federal witness hostage in an abandoned building."

Julian looked past Dante, his eyes locking onto Emma with a terrifying, obsessive intensity. "Come to me, Emma. Walk away from him now, and I will tell the feds you were a victim. If you stay with him, you go down with the ship. Choose your table."
