Chapter 4 - The Silent City of Weissensee

The Weissensee Cemetery was a sprawling, ancient wilderness of stone and overgrown ivy, hidden behind massive iron gates that had been left unlocked. The rain had turned into a thick, low-lying fog that clung to the graves, muffling the distant sounds of city traffic until the world felt as dead as the soil beneath their boots.

Emma’s heels clicked softly against the gravel path as they walked toward the third mausoleum on the left. Dante moved beside her like a specter, his footsteps entirely silent despite his size. He had drawn a silenced compact pistol from his concealed holster, his thumb resting lightly over the safety.

The mausoleum was a grand, gothic structure of blackened marble, its double iron doors resting ajar. A single, battery-powered lantern sat on the stone floor inside, casting elongated shadows against the stone sarcophagi.

"Step inside, Director," a voice echoed from the darkness of the vault. It was a smooth, synthetic voice, clearly passed through a real-time vocal scrambler.

Emma stepped through the threshold, Dante right behind her, his weapon raised and covering the dark corners of the room.

In the center of the mausoleum stood a waist-high iron pedestal. Resting on top of it was a ruggedized military laptop, its screen glowing with a real-time digital map of the institute back in the mountains. Small, pulsing red dots were scattered across the map, each representing the living quarters of a graduate.

"The drive, please," the voice said from a small speaker mounted beneath the pedestal. "Place it on the scanner plate to the right of the terminal."

"Where is the microform archive?" Emma asked, her voice steady, refusing to reveal the terror that the map inspired. "I’m not handing over anything until I know the physical copies are in my hands."

"You are not in a position to negotiate, Director," the scrambler rasped. "The auction currently has forty-two active bidders from Eastern Europe and South America. The current price for the institute’s registry is six million euros. If you do not connect the drive within sixty seconds, I will click 'confirm transaction.' The buyers will receive their download keys instantly."

Dante didn't look at the computer. His eyes were fixed on a small ventilation grate near the ceiling of the mausoleum. "Emma," he muttered beneath his breath. "The signal isn't remote. The proxy routing is an illusion. The server controlling that terminal is directly beneath our feet."

Emma caught his meaning instantly. She reached into her bag, pulled out a dummy biometric drive she had prepared during the train ride, and held it above the scanner. "I’m connecting it now," she said loudly to the speaker. "But it requires my fingerprint clearance to unpack the encryption."

As she leaned down, pretending to press her thumb against the plate, Dante spun around and fired three precise shots directly into the stone floor where a hidden seam in the marble indicated a service hatch. The bullets shattered the ancient lock mechanism beneath the stone.

Dante kicked the heavy marble flagstone aside with a grunt of pure effort, revealing a narrow, iron ladder dropping down into a well-lit, concrete communications trench—part of the forgotten underground bunker network that ran beneath the city.

A curse echoed from below—this time in a real, unaltered human voice.

"Stay here," Dante told Emma, his eyes flashing with a terrifying, predatory glee.

Before she could answer, he dove into the dark opening, disappearing into the subterranean depths before The Architect could even press the key to ruin them.
