Chapter 7 - The Escape from Pankow

The escape through the underground bunker network was a nightmare of smoke, gunfire, and collapsing concrete. The Obsidian Cartel’s strike team was professional, utilizing flashbangs and automatic weapons to clear the corridors with a brutal efficiency that spoke of military training.
Dante led the way, his large frame providing a shield for Emma and the stumbling Architect. He fired through the smoke, his movements a masterclass in tactical retreat—two shots to suppress, one to clear, always moving toward the secondary ventilation shaft that led to an abandoned rail yard two blocks away.
"Emma, stay low!" Dante roared as a burst of automatic fire chipped the concrete wall inches above her head.
She ducked, her fingers tightly gripping the strap of her bag containing the physical ledger. She felt a sharp sting along her shoulder as a piece of flying stone sliced through her white dress, but she ignored the pain, her eyes fixed on the back of Dante’s dark jacket.
They reached the base of the ventilation shaft just as a grenade detonated in the corridor behind them. The blast threw them forward onto the dirt floor, the shockwave leaving a high-pitched ringing in Emma's ears.
Dante scrambled to his feet, his shirt torn and covered in soot, but his eyes were entirely focused on her. "Can you climb?" he asked, his hands pulling her up with a strength that felt like the only solid thing left in the world.
"Yes," she gasped, coughing through the white dust.
He hoisted her onto the iron rungs of the shaft first, then grabbed The Architect and shoved him up behind her. "Don't look back," Dante ordered, turning his weapon toward the opening of the tunnel to cover their ascent.
As Emma climbed into the cold night air of the rail yard, she looked down. Through the grating, she saw Dante drop his empty pistol, draw a heavy combat knife from his boot, and step into the smoke to meet the first two cartel operators who burst through the ruins.
The struggle below was short, brutal, and silent. When Dante climbed out into the rain a minute later, the knife was back in his boot, and he was alone.
"Where is the broker?" Dante asked, looking around the dark yard filled with rusted train cars.
Emma pointed toward the perimeter fence where a dark shape was currently scrambling over the razor wire, leaving pieces of his silver suit behind. The Architect had run the second he hit the surface.

"Let him go," Emma said, catching her breath as she looked at the digital confirmation screen on her phone. "The file transfer is complete. The federal authorities have the ledger. The Architect doesn't have any leverage left to sell."
Dante walked over to her, his heavy arms wrapping around her shoulders as the rain began to wash the soot and blood from their skin. "It’s over," he murmured, his forehead resting against hers. "The real ledgers are open now. They can't close them again."
