Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Justice

The return to Switzerland was different. There were no hidden names, no ghost signals, and no countdown timers. By the time their train crossed the border, the international news networks were already in a frenzy.
The 'Black Forest Leak,' as the media called it, had triggered a series of unprecedented raids across Europe. High-ranking politicians, prominent corporate CEOs, and corrupt judges were being led out of their estates in handcuffs before the morning sun could even burn through the Alpine mist.
Emma sat in her office at the institute, watching the live feeds on her monitor. The colorful glass dome above her head caught the bright morning light, casting vibrant patterns of red, gold, and blue across her desk.
The door opened, and Marco walked in, carrying a tray with two cups of dark espresso and a plate of fresh lemon tarts. He looked exhausted, but the grim tension that had defined him for forty-eight hours had been replaced by a quiet, profound relief.
"The perimeter guards are standing down, Director," Marco said, setting the tray down. "The local police chief called ten minutes ago. He apologized for the 'excessive security presence' and told us the regional cartel cells have been completely dismantled by the federal police."
Emma took a cup of the espresso, her hands finally steady. "And the girls?"
"They're in the garden," Marco smiled, pointing out the window toward the central courtyard. "They’re setting up the long tables again. They said a system upgrade is no reason to waste the leftover roasted lamb from the graduation feast."
Emma looked out the window. A group of graduates was laughing as they chased a stray puppy through the rows of summer vegetables, their faces completely bright under the clear blue sky. They had no idea how close their world had come to ending, and they would never have to know. That was the director’s burden, and she carried it gladly.
A hand rested gently on her shoulder. Dante had entered the room silently, his wounds cleaned and bandaged beneath a fresh black linen shirt. He smelled of cedarwood and the clean mountain wind.
"The board of directors for the international trust called while you were asleep," Dante said, his voice low and warm against her ear. "They’ve approved the permanent funding grant for the institute. We’re expanding, Emma. They want us to open a secondary branch in the south of France by next spring."
May you like
Emma turned around in his embrace, her hands coming up to rest against his chest, right over that steady, powerful heartbeat that had been her anchor through the dark. "A secondary branch? More work, Instructor?"
"More quality control checks for the chocolate gateau," Dante countered, a beautiful, lazy smile breaking through his rugged features. "To ensure the director’s reputation remains unassailable on a global scale."
