Chapter 7 - The Trial of Grace Salazar

Three months later, the city courthouse was surrounded by hundreds of citizens, human rights advocates, and media personnel.

The trial of Grace and Brandon Salazar had drawn national attention, becoming a landmark case regarding domestic violence, financial crime, and familial abuse.

Adrian sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery, holding Ellie’s hand tightly. Ellie was now nearly eight months pregnant, her stomach round and full, wearing a beautiful navy-blue maternity dress.

Opposite them, behind the defense table, sat Grace and Brandon. Brandon looked defeated, his posture hunched, his eyes fixed on his manacled hands. Grace, however, still held her chin high, refusing to show a shred of remorse, glaring furiously at the gallery.

The state prosecutor, a fierce woman named DA Victoria Cross, stood before the jury box, holding up the heavy steel chain that had bound Clara Martinez for two years, along with the broken padlock from the shed.

"Members of the jury," DA Cross’s voice echoed powerfully through the silent courtroom. "The defense wants you to believe that this was a tragic family dispute that got out of hand. They want you to believe that Grace Salazar was merely an overbearing mother trying to maintain discipline in her home."

DA Cross pointed dramatically at the defense table.

"That is a lie," Cross declared. "What you see sitting before you is a cold, calculated predator who transformed a suburban home into a prison of horror. She starved a pregnant daughter-in-law because her silence threatened her financial empire. She chained a young woman underground for seven hundred days for gold."

The prosecutor turned to face the gallery, looking directly at Ellie and Adrian.

"If not for the courage of Adrian Salazar—a man who refused to believe his mother's deceitful lies, a man who broke open that padlock with his bare hands—two innocent women would be dead today."

For the next four days, witness after witness took the stand.

Clara Martinez testified via a secure video link from her facility, her voice steady and clear as she detailed every indignity, every threat, and every act of cruelty inflicted upon her by Grace and Brandon.

Then, Ellie took the stand.

With quiet, unwavering dignity, Ellie described the night she was struck down in the basement, the cold darkness of the shed, the agonized fear for her unborn child, and the moment she heard Adrian’s voice through the wooden door.

As Ellie spoke, several jurors openly wiped away tears. Grace tried to scoff aloud, but the judge sharply warned her that any further outbursts would result in her immediate removal from the courtroom.

Finally, the jury retired to deliberate.

They returned in less than ninety minutes.

"On the charge of Attempted First-Degree Murder of Ellie Salazar," the jury foreman read aloud, "we find the defendant, Grace Salazar, GUILTY."

"On the charge of First-Degree Kidnapping of Clara Martinez, we find the defendant, Grace Salazar, GUILTY."

"On all remaining thirty-four counts of torture, grand larceny, and conspiracy, we find the defendants Grace Salazar and Brandon Salazar, GUILTY."

The judge slammed his gavel down. "Sentencing will be carried out immediately."

The judge looked down at Grace over his glasses, his voice dripping with profound moral disgust. "Grace Salazar, in my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely encountered a human heart so utterly devoid of empathy, love, or conscience. You abused your role as a mother to turn your children into accomplices in evil."

"I sentence you, Grace Salazar, to two consecutive life terms in state prison, without the possibility of parole."

"Brandon Salazar, for your active participation in these atrocities, I sentence you to forty years in state prison."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead them away in heavy chains, Brandon finally broke down, sobbing hysterically and screaming at his mother: "This is your fault! You destroyed my life! I hate you!"

Grace didn't look at Brandon. She turned her head toward Adrian, her eyes filled with insane, burning rage.

"You're no son of mine!" Grace screamed as she was dragged through the exit doors. "You hear me, Adrian? You're a traitor! You're nothing!"

Adrian sat quietly, watching the doors close behind her. He didn't feel anger. He didn't feel vengeance. He felt only a deep, profound sense of quiet relief.

It was finally, completely over.
