Chapter 6 - The Web of Accomplices

Adrian opened the door, welcoming Marcus and David inside.
David Martinez, a tall, tired-looking man in his late thirties, stepped into the room and immediately pulled Adrian into a deep, emotional embrace.
"Adrian," David choked out, slapping Adrian’s back with genuine gratitude. "I don't even know how to begin to thank you. If you hadn't broken open that shed... if you hadn't forced the police to search beneath that floor... my sister would have died down there."
"You don't need to thank me, David," Adrian said, ushering them toward the dining table. "Clara was family to us once. I’m just so sorry my family caused her so much suffering."
"Clara is doing better every day," David said, sitting down. "She’s staying at a specialized recovery center in Vermont. Her speech is coming back, and the doctors say she will walk without a limp in a few months."
Marcus Vance placed a legal briefcase on the table, opening it to reveal several court filings.
"I brought the latest updates from the State Prosecutor's office," Marcus said, his tone professional and focused. "The grand jury has returned a thirty-six-count indictment against Grace Salazar and Brandon Salazar."
"What are the primary charges?" Ellie asked, taking a seat beside Adrian.
"First-degree kidnapping, attempted murder, human trafficking, grand larceny, and torture," Marcus stated grimly. "Given the severity of the physical evidence and Clara’s detailed testimony, the prosecutor is seeking life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for both of them."
"Has Brandon tried to make another deal?" Adrian asked.
"He tried," Marcus smirked slightly. "He offered to testify against a network of local black-market financial brokers who helped him launder the stolen bank funds. That investigation led to the arrest of three other individuals, including your mother’s sister, Aunt Evelyn."
Adrian stared in shock. "Aunt Evelyn?"
"Evelyn was the one who bought the commercial padlock for the shed," Marcus revealed. "She also provided the fake spiritual cleansing story Grace used to try and deter you from opening the door. She was paid twenty thousand dollars from the embezzled funds to keep quiet and assist in moving the supplies."
Adrian rubbed his temples, feeling a fresh wave of disgust. His entire maternal side of the family wasn't just toxic; they were a coordinated criminal enterprise, bound together by greed, vanity, and a sociopathic disregard for human life.
"Evelyn was arrested two hours ago," Marcus continued. "She’s currently being held on five hundred thousand dollars bail as an accessory to kidnapping."
"Good," Ellie said firmly, her voice devoid of any pity. "Let all of them face the consequences of what they built."
"There is one more thing," Marcus added, looking at Adrian. "Grace’s defense attorney filed a motion claiming Grace is mentally unfit to stand trial, hoping to have her committed to a soft psychiatric facility instead of state prison."

Adrian’s jaw tightened. "She’s not crazy, Marcus. She’s evil. She planned every single detail of this with complete clarity."
"Don't worry," Marcus assured him. "The court-appointed forensic psychiatrist evaluated her yesterday. His report concluded that Grace Salazar is fully coherent, hyper-rational, and completely aware of the illegality of her actions. She will stand trial in open court."
