Chapter 5 - The Shield of Love

Two weeks passed.
The story of the "Salazar House of Horrors" dominated national headlines. News vans lined the street outside Adrian’s former house, but Adrian never returned there.
With the help of a real estate lawyer, Adrian immediately put the house up for emergency receiver sale through the court, using the proceeds to create a trust fund for Clara Martinez’s medical recovery and mental health rehabilitation.
Adrian moved Ellie into a quiet, secure, ground-floor apartment in a peaceful suburban neighborhood forty miles outside the city. The apartment had large windows that let in abundant sunlight, a lush garden in the back, and twenty-four-hour private security stationed at the gate.
Ellie was recovering remarkably well. Her skin had regained its rosy color, her weight was stabilizing, and recent high-resolution ultrasounds confirmed that the baby—a healthy, growing little girl—was thriving without any signs of distress or developmental issues.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Adrian sat on the living room rug, carefully assembling a white wooden crib for the nursery.
Ellie stepped out of the kitchen, carrying two mugs of warm chamomile tea. She walked over, set the mugs on the coffee table, and sat down beside Adrian on the floor, leaning her head against his shoulder.
Adrian immediately stopped hammering, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her soft, pregnant belly against his side. He pressed a warm kiss into her hair.
"How are you feeling today?" Adrian asked gently. "Any nausea?"
"None," Ellie smiled, taking his hand and placing it against her abdomen.
Suddenly, Adrian felt a distinct, gentle kick against the palm of his hand.
His eyes widened in wonder. He looked at Ellie, his breath catching in his throat. "Was that..."
"She’s kicking," Ellie beamed, tears of pure happiness shining in her eyes. "She’s letting you know she’s strong, Adrian."
Adrian buried his face in Ellie’s neck, a few tears spilling onto her sweater. For weeks, he had been haunted by nightmares—nightmares of the lock on the shed, the sound of weak knocking, the dark hole beneath the concrete floor. But holding his wife and feeling his daughter’s life pulsing against his palm washed away the cold lingering shadows of the past.
"I promised myself I would protect you both," Adrian whispered softly. "I will never let anyone hurt you again. Never."
"You already saved us, Adrian," Ellie said softly, turning her face to kiss his lips. "You came home early. You listened to your heart instead of their lies. You brought us into the light."

Their quiet moment was interrupted by a soft knock at the front door.
Adrian stood up instantly, his body tensing out of reflex, but relaxed when he saw through the peephole that it was Marcus Vance, the veteran legal representative handling their civil suits and victim protection orders, accompanied by Clara Martinez’s brother, David.
