Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Future

Later that evening, after their guests had left and the sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of purple and gold, the house grew quiet.
Baby Hope was fast asleep in her sunlit nursery, tucked safely inside her white wooden crib, her tiny chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm.
Adrian stood on the back deck, leaning his arms against the wooden railing, looking out at the quiet garden. The air was cool, carrying the fresh scent of blooming night jasmine.
Ellie walked out onto the deck, wrapping a warm cardigan around her shoulders, and slid her arms around Adrian’s waist from behind, resting her cheek against his back.
Adrian turned around in her arms, wrapping his hands around her shoulders and pulling her close into his chest.
"What are you thinking about?" Ellie asked softly, looking up into his eyes.
"I was thinking about the day I came home forty-eight hours early," Adrian admitted quietly. "I used to think it was just a coincidence... just good timing with a client signing off early."
Ellie reached up, gently running her fingers along his jawline. "It wasn't a coincidence, Adrian. It was love. You knew in your heart that something was wrong. You came home to protect us."
Adrian looked at the warm, glowing light shining through the nursery window upstairs, where their daughter slept in safety and peace.
He thought briefly of his mother and brother, sitting in cold, windowless concrete cells hundreds of miles away, trapped forever in the dark world they had built out of greed and malice. But the thought no longer brought him pain, guilt, or regret. They had chosen their path; he had chosen his.
"We built a good life here, Ellie," Adrian said, his voice rich with quiet confidence and deep satisfaction. "A safe life."

"A beautiful life," Ellie corrected gently, smiling as she pulled his face down to hers.
Under the starlit sky, surrounded by the sweet fragrance of the spring garden and the unbroken warmth of true love, Adrian kissed his wife—knowing that the nightmare was forever behind them, and their real story had only just begun.
