Chapter 2 - The House of Secrets

The county hospital was heavily guarded. Two armed sheriff's deputies stood at the entrance of the intensive care unit, while paramedics worked feverishly inside Ellie’s room to stabilize her condition.

Adrian sat in a plastic chair in the hallway, his head buried in his hands. His clothes were still soaked with rainwater and mud from the shed.

The door to the room opened, and Dr. Aris Thorne, Ellie’s obstetrician, walked out, pulling off her surgical mask.

Adrian shot up from his chair instantly. "Dr. Thorne! How is she? How is the baby?"

Dr. Thorne laid a reassuring hand on Adrian’s arm. "Ellie is extremely weak, Adrian. She was suffering from severe hypothermia, acute dehydration, and ketoacidosis. If she had remained in that shed for another twelve hours, we would have lost both her and the child."

Adrian choked back a sob, grabbing the doctor’s sleeve. "But the baby... is the baby still..."

"The baby has a strong heartbeat," Dr. Thorne said gently, smiling slightly. "It’s a miracle, frankly. We’ve administered intravenous fluids, electrolytes, and medications to halt the uterine contractions brought on by the physical stress. Ellie is resting now under heavy sedation. You can go in and see her, but keep it brief."

Adrian let out a long, shuddering breath, dropping his head in silent prayer before rushing into the room.

Ellie lay on the bed, surrounded by monitoring equipment. The pale, ghost-like appearance was slowly giving way to a soft flush as warm fluids entered her bloodstream. An ultrasound monitor beside her bed displayed the rhythmic, steady pulsing of their baby’s heart.

Adrian pulled a chair close to the bed, sat down, and gently wrapped his hands around Ellie’s fragile wrist, being careful of the IV lines.

"I'm so sorry, Ellie," he wept softly, leaning his forehead against the edge of the mattress. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there to protect you... I'm so sorry I ever let those monsters near you."

Ellie’s fingers twitched gently against his palm. Her eyes opened slowly, heavy with medication.

"Adrian..." she whispered, her voice smooth now from the moisture.

"I'm right here, baby. I'm right here. The baby is okay. You're both safe."

Ellie closed her eyes tightly, a single tear slipping down her temple. "Your mother... she came into our bedroom on Wednesday night while I was sleeping. She had Brandon with her. They held me down, Adrian... they took my phone... and they dragged me outside..."

"Why?" Adrian sobbed, hatred burning hot in his chest. "Why did she do this to you?"

"Because..." Ellie swallowed hard, looking straight into Adrian’s eyes. "Because on Wednesday afternoon, I went downstairs to wash the laundry. I heard a noise coming from behind the old pantry wall in the basement. I pushed aside the storage shelves... and I found a hidden metal door."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "A hidden door?"

"I heard a woman crying behind it," Ellie whispered, her body trembling with remembered horror. "I called out to her, and she said her name was Clara. Before I could figure out how to unlock it, your mother came down the stairs. She was holding a heavy wooden mallet, Adrian. She hit me from behind... when I woke up, I was inside that shed."

Adrian squeezed Ellie’s hand, his blood running cold.

The shed hadn't just been a place of punishment. It was a makeshift prison where Grace and Brandon had moved Ellie after she accidentally stumbled upon the dark secret they had been hiding in the house for nearly two years.
