Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

Down at the central police headquarters, the atmosphere was suffocating. Sergeant Miller sat opposite Adrian in a small conference room, dropping a thick legal folder onto the wooden table between them.

"We just finished the initial questioning of Clara Martinez at the county hospital," Sergeant Miller began, his expression grim. "She’s malnourished, suffering from severe Vitamin D deficiency, and has physical scarring consistent with long-term restraint, but her mind is clear."

"What did she tell you?" Adrian asked, his knuckles white against the tabletop.

"Two years ago, Clara worked as an accountant at First City Bank," Miller explained, flipping open the folder. "She discovered a series of massive, illegal wire transfers passing through several dormant accounts. Over eight hundred thousand dollars had been embezzled from local construction funds."

Adrian gasped. "Eight hundred thousand dollars?"

"The person who authorized those fraudulent transfers," Miller continued, pointing to a signature on a bank document, "was your brother, Brandon Salazar, during his brief employment as a junior loans officer."

Adrian leaned back in his chair, feeling sick to his stomach. "Brandon..."

"Clara confronted Brandon privately before reporting it to the bank board," Miller said. "That evening, Brandon invited her to your family’s house under the pretense of settling the matter and returning the stolen funds. Instead, your mother and Brandon drugged her drink, bound her, and locked her in the sub-basement room beneath the house."

"Why didn't they just kill her?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with revulsion.

"Because Clara was the only person who knew the master encryption passwords to access the offshore accounts where Brandon had hidden the stolen money," Miller said coldly. "Your mother and brother kept her alive, starving her, tormenting her, trying to break her spirit so she would surrender the codes. For two years, they lived off small withdrawals while keeping a young woman chained like an animal beneath their feet."

"And when Ellie found out..." Adrian trailed off, the horrifying puzzle pieces finally locking together.

"When Ellie stumbled onto the basement door on Wednesday, Grace realized the entire scheme was about to collapse," Miller said. "They locked Ellie in the shed to decide what to do with her. If you hadn't come home forty-eight hours early, Adrian... your mother and brother were planning to stage a fatal car accident involving Ellie, and then move Clara to another location."

Adrian stood up so fast his chair slammed against the floor. He paced back and forth across the small room, his chest heaving, his hands balled into tight fists.

"Where are they now?" Adrian demanded. "Where are Grace and Brandon?"

"They are in holding cells downstairs," Miller replied, standing up as well. "Brandon is cracking under pressure. He’s already trying to lay all the blame on your mother. But Grace... Grace hasn't said a word. She’s demanding to speak to you."

"To me?" Adrian laughed bitterly. "She wants to speak to me?"

"I wouldn't advise it, Salazar," Miller warned. "She’s a manipulative narcissist facing life in prison."

"No," Adrian said, turning to face the officer with eyes like cold steel. "Take me to her. I want to look her in the eyes."
