Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Empire

Julian stared at her, the room plunging into absolute silence.

He slowly reached out, his hand trembling, and laid his palm flat against her belly. A second later, he felt a faint, distinct kick from within.

Tears stung Julian’s eyes. A tear slipped down his sharp jawline, falling onto her charcoal uniform.

"Our child..." he breathed, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in nearly a year. "You've been carrying our baby... alone? In hiding?"

"I had no choice," Elena whimpered, cupping his jaw with her worn, rough hand. "Your mother’s men searched for me in Paris and Vienna. I had to sell my wedding ring under a false name just to buy fake identity papers. I found this job at The Grand Alcazar because the owner is an old friend of my late mother’s, but even he didn't know who I really was. I worked twelve-hour shifts scrubbing floors just to afford a tiny room with heat."

"Forgive me," Julian sobbed, pressing his forehead against her knee. "Forgive me, Elena. I should have searched harder. I should have burned the world down until I found you. I trusted the wrong people... I trusted my own mother."

"She is a monster, Julian," Elena said, her eyes darkening with real fear. "And she isn't acting alone. Camila’s father, Arthur Vance, is involved. The merger they are planning isn't a business expansion—it’s an asset-stripping operation. They are trying to bankrupt Rossi Enterprises while siphoning your personal fortune into offshore accounts in Switzerland."

Julian lifted his head, his eyes hardening into ice. The grief and shock that had paralyzed him for the last hour instantly solidified into lethal, calculated resolve.

"They took eight months of our lives," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "They forced my wife to scrub floors in a maid's uniform while carrying my heir. They thought they could destroy us."

He stood up and pulled his encrypted satellite phone from his jacket pocket.

He dialed a number he hadn't used in five years—the private line of Hector Thorne, a retired intelligence operative who owed Julian his life after a rescue operation in South America.

"Hector," Julian said when the line connected.

"Julian? I haven't heard your voice in years. What do you need?"

"I need a fortress," Julian replied, his eyes fixed on Elena. "I need an armored transport at the private hangar in twenty minutes. I need your best team stationed around The Grand Alcazar. And I need a complete wiretap on Victoria Rossi and Arthur Vance."

"Understood," Hector answered without hesitation. "Are we at war?"

Julian looked down at Elena, who was watching him with a mixture of hope and fear.

"No," Julian said softly. "We are executing an annihilation."

He hung up the phone and walked over to the suite’s master closet. He pulled down a plush, white cashmere robe and a pair of soft leather slippers he had ordered for his stay. He walked over to Elena, gently unbuttoning the coarse grey uniform, throwing the hotel badge onto the floor, and wrapping her in the soft, warm robe.

"You will never wear that uniform again," Julian promised, kissing her forehead. "From this moment on, you sit on the throne."

Before Elena could answer, a heavy, rhythmic thud echoed against the penthouse doors.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

"Julian!" Victoria Rossi’s sharp, authoritative voice boomed from the hallway outside. "Open this door right now! You are ruining everything!"
