Chapter 1 - The Scene in the Foyer

The air in the grand foyer of The Grand Alcazar Hotel grew so thick with tension that even the soft string quartet playing near the marble fountain lost its rhythm and faded into silence.
Julian didn't care about the gawking billionaires, the whispering socialites, or the sweating concierge. His world had shrunk to the space between him and the woman in the charcoal-grey uniform.
Eight months. Eight agonizing months of searching, of sleepless nights, of drinking himself into stupors while staring at her empty closet back in Milan. He had hired private investigators, tracked bank accounts, and combed border records, only to find nothing. The narrative pushed by his inner circle—especially his mother, Victoria Rossi, and his COO, Camila’s father—was that Elena had taken a multi-million-euro payout and fled the country with a secret lover.
And yet, here she stood, smelling not of French perfume, but of harsh industrial bleach and lemon furniture polish.
"Elena, look at me," Julian commanded, stepping closer. The raw desperation in his voice shocked even himself. "Look at me and tell me what is happening."
Elena took a step back, pulling her brass cart between them like a shield. She kept her chin tucked, but her shoulders were stiff, trembling under the weight of her heavily rounded belly. She was at least seven months pregnant.
Seven months.
The math struck Julian like a physical blow. Eight months ago, the week before she vanished, they had spent a rare, uninterrupted weekend at his estate in Lake Como.
"Sir, if you have a complaint regarding the room preparation, I can fetch the head of house-services," Elena said, her voice flat, devoid of the warmth that used to make his name sound like a song when she whispered it.
"Stop it!" Julian snapped, his composure completely shattering. He reached across the cart and grabbed her wrist. Her skin was rough, her knuckles raw from scrubbing floors. "Stop calling me 'sir'! You are Elena Rossi! You are my wife!"
Camila gasped, her sharp nails digging into Julian’s arm. "Julian, let go of her! You’re embarrassing me! Look at her—she’s a maid! Do you really want the press writing about how the CEO of Rossi Enterprises is harassing hotel staff?"
Julian turned a razor-sharp glare toward Camila. "Touch me again, Camila, and your father’s contract with my logistics firm is terminated by midnight."
Camila recoiled as if struck, her eyes widening in disbelief.
The concierge, Mr. Laurent, stepped forward, wringing his hands nervously. "Mr. Rossi... please. The Grand Alcazar prides itself on discretion. If there is a personal matter—"
"Get us a private room. Now," Julian growled.
"I cannot leave my shift, sir," Elena said firmly, though her eyes finally darted to his face. For a split second, the cold mask cracked, revealing a flash of absolute, terror-stricken agony. "I need this job. If I am terminated, I lose my housing in the staff quarters."
Staff quarters. The thought of his pregnant wife living in a cramped, windowless employee basement made Julian’s blood run cold with fury.
"You aren't staying in staff quarters another minute," Julian said softly, his tone shifting from anger to an overwhelming wave of protective instinct. He let go of her wrist, instead sliding his hand gently down to encompass her cold, trembling fingers. "You are coming with me."
"No!" Elena pulled her hand back violently, her eyes darting toward the grand glass entrance of the hotel. "You don't understand, Julian! If they see you with me... if they know I’m here..."
Before she could finish her sentence, a tall man in a dark suit emerged from the private elevator corridor. It was Marcus, Julian’s chief of security—a man who had been provided to him by his mother six months ago to "protect" him after Elena’s sudden departure.
The moment Marcus saw Elena, his eyes widened slightly, and his hand instinctively moved toward the inside pocket of his jacket.

Elena gasped, taking two steps backward into the cart, knocking a bottle of disinfectant onto the polished onyx floor. It shattered with a sharp crack, spilling soapy liquid across the sparkling tiles.
"Julian, please," Elena whispered, her voice finally breaking into a sob. "If you ever loved me... let me go. They will kill this baby."
