Chapter 10 - The View from the Balcony

Three years later.

The sun was slowly sinking below the horizon, painting the sky above Lake Como in brilliant shades of violet, orange, and brushed gold.

At the edge of the terrace at Villa Bellissima, a massive oak dining table was set for a summer evening feast. Fresh flowers, flickering candles, and silver platters of Italian pasta filled the air with wonderful aromas.

In the gardens below, four-year-old Leo was running across the lush green grass, wearing a tiny football jersey, chasing a golden retriever puppy while giggling wildly.

Behind him walked Julian, dressed in a simple linen shirt and jeans. He caught the little boy, lifting him high into the air as Leo shrieked with delight, before carrying him piggyback up the stone stairs toward the terrace.

Elena stood by the stone balustrade, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching her husband and son with a smile of pure, unbroken contentment.

Her gallery in Milan had become one of the most respected contemporary art spaces in Europe, supporting young, underprivileged artists from across the continent. Rossi Enterprises was thriving under Julian’s ethical, reformed leadership, donating millions to women's shelters and family protection foundations across Italy.

Victoria Rossi remained in a private medical-custodial facility in southern Italy, her appeals denied, completely stripped of her fortune and influence. She was a forgotten ghost of a bitter past that could no longer touch them.

Julian carried Leo over to the daybed, setting the sleepy four-year-old down with a soft kiss on his forehead.

He walked over to Elena, stepping up behind her, wrapping his long arms around her waist, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" Julian asked softly, watching the golden light reflect off the calm water of the lake.

Elena leaned back against his broad chest, placing her hands over his arms.

"I was thinking about four years ago," Elena murmured, a quiet smile playing on her lips. "The night you found me at The Grand Alcazar."

Julian’s arms tightened around her instinctively. "The worst night of my life... and the best."

"I used to look at those polished onyx floors while I was scrubbing them," Elena whispered, turning her head to look at his sharp, handsome profile. "And I used to pray that somehow, somewhere, you still loved me."

Julian turned her around in his arms, wrapping her in a warm embrace, looking down into her eyes with an unshakeable, infinite devotion.

"I loved you when you were my wife in a palace," Julian whispered, gently brushing a lock of dark hair behind her ear. "I loved you when you were a maid in a hotel. And I will love you through every lifetime that follows this one."

Elena reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling his face down to hers.

"We survived the storm, Julian," she whispered softly against his lips.

May you like

"No, my love," Julian smiled, kissing her deeply under the warm, golden canopy of the Italian twilight. "We became the storm."

Below them, the lake sparkled like a million diamonds, reflecting the unbreakable light of a love that had conquered the dark.
