Chapter 8 - The Maid’s Secret

"It feels different," Sophia said softly as Lorenzo reached her. She looked up at the vast stone mansion. "It doesn't feel cold anymore."

"That's because the dark secrets are gone," Lorenzo replied, stepping closer to her.

Emma ran past them, letting Biscuit chase a butterfly across the green lawn, her joyful laughter filling the morning air.

Lorenzo watched the child play, then turned his gaze back to Sophia. "There is one secret left, Sophia."

Sophia blinked, confused. "A secret?"

"Seven years ago," Lorenzo said softly, "when you arrived on my porch in the storm... you told me your husband died in a construction accident, and his company sent you a check for nine thousand dollars."

Sophia lowered her head, a soft sigh escaping her lips. "Yes. It was the worst day of my life."

"I looked into that construction company three days ago," Lorenzo revealed gently.

Sophia looked up, startled. "What?"

"The company that killed your husband was owned by a subsidiary of the Moretti syndicate," Lorenzo explained, his tone filled with soft compassion. "They cut corners on safety equipment. When your husband died trying to save his crew, Moretti’s men tried to silence you with a insultingly small check."

Sophia felt tears gather in her eyes as the painful memories surfaced. "I knew it was wrong... but I was so poor, so helpless... I couldn't fight a massive corporation."

"You don't have to fight them anymore," Lorenzo said. He pulled an official legal document from his jacket and handed it to her. "Yesterday morning, as part of the federal asset seizure against Moretti, my lawyers redirected fifty million dollars of Moretti's illegal funds into a permanent trust fund in your and Emma's names."

Sophia stared at the paper in her hands. The numbers blurrred before her eyes. "Fifty... million dollars? Lorenzo, no! I can't accept this! I am just a maid!"

Lorenzo took the paper from her hand, tossed it aside, and took both of her hands into his warm, strong palms.

"You are not a maid, Sophia," Lorenzo said, his voice deep and trembling with genuine emotion. "You are the bravest woman I have ever known. You stayed by my side when I was bleeding in a cellar. You protected my life when everyone else ran."

"Lorenzo..." Sophia wept softly, tears streaming down her smiling cheeks.

"I don't want you to sweep my floors anymore, Sophia," Lorenzo whispered, bringing her hands up to his lips, kissing her knuckles reverently. "I want you to stand beside me. As my equal. As my partner. As my wife."

Sophia gasped, her heart leaping against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Wife?"

"If you will have a man with a dark past who promises to spend the rest of his life making your world bright," Lorenzo said, his dark eyes shining with raw vulnerability.

Sophia didn't answer with words. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, passionate kiss.

Lorenzo wrapped his strong arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet, holding her close against his heart as the morning sun washed over them in brilliant light.
