Chapter 1 - The Circle of Five

The room in the Ridgewood safe house smelled faintly of antiseptic, old oak, and rain.
Lorenzo DeLuca did not move his left arm. The dull, throbbed aching in his shoulder reminded him of how close he had come to the grave. But his eyes—dark, icy, and sharp—were fully alert.
He looked down at the little girl sleeping beside his right hand. Emma’s fingers were still wrapped tightly around the broken plastic handle of her toy scissors.
"How many people know I’m here?" Lorenzo repeated, his voice raspy from days of silence.
Dr. Reed placed a glass of water on the bedside table. "Five people. Myself. Marcus Bell. Anthony Graves. Daniel Cross. And Sophia."
Lorenzo’s eyes softened slightly when he heard Sophia’s name. "Sophia found me?"
"Emma found you," Dr. Reed corrected gently. "The child followed a cat down into the cellar. Sophia pulled her away, realized something was wrong, and called us. If she had called Vincent Romano, you would already be at the bottom of Long Island Sound."
Lorenzo closed his eyes for a brief second. Vincent. A man he had brought into his inner circle eleven years ago. A man he had fed, protected, and treated like a younger brother.
"Why didn't she call Vincent?" Lorenzo asked quietly.
The bedroom door creaked open. Sophia Rossi stepped inside carrying a tray with hot broth and a clean towel. She stopped in her tracks when she saw Lorenzo’s open eyes.
"Because I saw him," Sophia said, her voice steady as she set the tray on the side table. "Two hours before we found you in the cellar, I went to the main office to deliver the mail. Vincent was sitting in your chair. He was touching your desk like it belonged to him... and he was smiling."
Lorenzo looked at Sophia. The woman who had come to his door seven years ago, shivering in a rainstorm with a infant in her arms, was no longer the fragile girl he had taken in. Fear had been replaced by a quiet, unyielding courage.
"A smile reveals more than a confession," Lorenzo murmured. "Where is Vincent now?"
"He has declared a state of emergency across the five boroughs," Marcus Bell said, stepping into the room from the hallway. "He convened the council of captains last night. He claimed you were kidnapped by the rival Moretti syndicate from New Jersey. He’s taking over the family accounts under the pretense of paying a ransom."
"And the captains believed him?" Lorenzo asked.
"Most of them are confused," Marcus replied. "Some are suspicious. But Vincent has brought in external enforcement—mercenaries from the docks. Anyone who asks too many questions about your disappearance gets silenced."
Lorenzo slowly shifted his body, wincing slightly as his bandaged shoulder protested, but he sat upright. Emma stirred next to him, rubbing her eyes, and let out a tiny yawn.
"Mr. Lorenzo?" Emma blinked, her hazel eyes opening wide. "You're awake!"
Lorenzo reached out with his uninjured right hand and gently patted her head. "I am, little one. Thanks to you."
Emma held up her broken pink scissors proudly. "I tried to cut the black ropes. But my rabbit broke."
Lorenzo looked at the broken plastic toy in the child's hand. Then he looked at Marcus.
"Keep the broken piece," Lorenzo said quietly. "It’s a reminder that strength doesn't come from steel. It comes from who is holding it."
"What is the plan, Boss?" Anthony asked, leaning against the doorframe. "Do we march on the estate?"
"No," Lorenzo said, his gaze turning to ice. "Vincent thinks I'm dead or bleeding out in a ditch. If we attack now, he uses the family's resources to crush us. We let him think he’s won. We let him reveal every rat in our house. When a snake feels safe, it comes out into the open."

Sophia stepped closer, looking worriedly at Lorenzo’s pale face. "And what about the estate? The guards are loyal to Vincent now."
"The estate is just brick and mortar," Lorenzo replied, looking at Sophia and Emma. "My family is in this room. And we are going to tear Vincent’s kingdom down piece by piece."
