Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Promise

Five years later.

The DeLuca mansion was no longer known as the stronghold of a mob boss. It was famous across New York as the headquarters of the Rossi-DeLuca Child Protection Foundation—an international charity organization that provided free shelter, legal aid, and medical care to underprivileged mothers and children.

It was a warm summer evening.

The sun was setting over the Sound, casting long golden light across the manicured lawns.

On the back patio, a large wooden table was set for dinner.

Marcus Bell and Anthony Graves were sitting near the barbecue, laughing as Dr. Reed tried to teach Anthony how to grill steaks without burning them.

Near the garden, eight-year-old Emma was running across the grass, kicking a soccer ball with her little brother—three-year-old Leo, who had his father’s dark hair and mischievous dark eyes.

Biscuit the calico cat—now very old and lazy—sat on a sunny stone wall, watching the children with sleepy indifference.

Sophia sat at the head of the long wooden table, arranging a vase of fresh white roses. She was thirty-two now, her beauty glowing with contentment, health, and deep inner peace.

Lorenzo stepped out through the French doors, wearing a simple linen shirt and trousers, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade.

He walked over behind Sophia, setting the tray down, and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.

"You look beautiful tonight, Mrs. DeLuca," Lorenzo whispered into her ear.

Sophia leaned back against his broad chest, placing her hands over his. "You say that every night."

"Because it’s true every night," Lorenzo smiled, kissing the side of her neck.

They stood together in quiet harmony, watching their children play on the lawn. Leo kicked the soccer ball toward Emma, who deftly caught it and scored a goal between two trees, making the little boy giggle wildly.

Lorenzo reached into his pocket and pulled out two small objects, setting them gently on the wooden table beside the flower vase.

The first was his father’s old pocket watch—now fully restored, polished, and ticking rhythmically with a steady, soothing beat.

The second was the broken half of the pink plastic rabbit scissors that Emma had used eight years ago in that dark, cold cellar.

Sophia looked at the two items, a soft, tender smile touching her lips.

"From a broken chair in a cellar," Sophia murmured softly, "to a home full of love."

Lorenzo tightened his arms around her, pulling her close as the evening stars began to twinkle in the darkening sky above the ocean.

"The world thought power was built on fear, blood, and iron," Lorenzo whispered, his voice filled with eternal peace. "They were wrong. Power is built on who you protect... and the love that holds you together."

Sophia turned in his arms, looking up into the eyes of the man who had given her everything, and kissed him under the summer stars—a kiss that carried the sweet, unbroken promise of forever.
