Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Traitor

Vincent choked, his feet dangling six inches off the floor as Lorenzo’s massive hand tightened around his neck.
"Please... Lorenzo..." Vincent gasped, his face turning purple, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Mercy... we were family..."
"Family doesn't leave a man to bleed out in a cellar," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into an abyssal chill. "Family doesn't threaten a mother and a three-year-old child."
Lorenzo threw Vincent across the room. Vincent crashed into his desk, sending papers, golden pens, and silver trays scattering across the floor.
Vincent lay on the carpet, coughing violently, gasping for air, looking up at Lorenzo with pure, pathetic desperation.
At that moment, Marcus and Anthony stepped into the study, carrying three large duffel bags filled with stolen cash and ledger books they had recovered from Vincent’s private safe.
"The house is secure, Boss," Marcus reported. "All mercenaries have been disarmed and handed over to federal authorities along with evidence of Moretti’s smuggling operations. The family captains are waiting outside in the driveway."
Lorenzo looked down at Vincent.
"What do we do with him, Boss?" Anthony asked, drawing his sidearm. "A bullet?"
Vincent cowered, crawling under the desk, weeping uncontrollably. "No! Please! Don't kill me! I'll leave New York! I'll go to Europe! You'll never see me again!"
Lorenzo stared at the broken man shivering under the desk.
Years ago, Lorenzo would have ended Vincent’s life without a second thought. That was the law of the underworld. Blood for blood.
But as Lorenzo looked at the empty desk, he remembered the warm, gentle face of Sophia... and the sound of little Emma’s laughter echoing through the safe house. He remembered the promise he had made to be more than a monster.
"No bullets," Lorenzo said quietly.
Vincent looked up in utter shock. "You... you're letting me live?"
"Living is your punishment, Vincent," Lorenzo said coldly. "I am stripping you of every dime, every account, every property, and your name. You will be handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation tonight along with full confessions regarding the Moretti family."
Vincent’s face drained of all color. Federal prison meant decades behind bars in a maximum-security facility, surrounded by men who hated traitors.
"You will spend the rest of your life in a six-by-eight concrete cell," Lorenzo whispered, leaning down close to Vincent’s ear. "And every single night, when the lights go out, you will remember that you lost everything because you underestimated a three-year-old girl with a pair of plastic scissors."
Marcus and Anthony dragged the weeping, screaming traitor out of the study, his frantic pleas fading down the long hallway.
Silence returned to the master suite.
Lorenzo walked over to his grand oak desk. He picked up his father's crushed steel pocket watch, staring at the dent made by the bullet that should have killed him.
He carefully placed the watch into his pocket.
Then he pulled out his cell phone and dialed a number he knew by heart.
"Sophia," Lorenzo said softly when she answered on the first ring. "It's over. The house is clear. I'm coming home."

On the other end of the line, Sophia let out a sob of pure relief. "Are you hurt?"
"No," Lorenzo smiled, a genuine, warm smile touching his lips. "I'm completely whole. Tell Emma I found Biscuit."
