Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The escape from Brooklyn shattered Vincent’s sanity.

Back inside the DeLuca estate on Long Island, Vincent locked the iron gates, posted thirty armed mercenaries along the perimeter, and turned the mansion into a fortress.

He spent the night drinking heavily in Lorenzo’s study, clutching a bottle of scotch, staring frantically at the dark windows.

"He's a ghost!" Vincent shouted at his remaining captains. "I saw him! He took a bullet to the heart and he’s still walking!"

"Vincent, calm down," said Sal, a senior captain who had sided with Vincent for money. "He’s just one man. We have thirty armed guards, heavy surveillance, and the police chief on our payroll. If Lorenzo tries to enter this property, we’ll blow him to pieces."

"You don't understand!" Vincent roared, throwing his glass against the wall, shattering it into a hundred pieces. "Lorenzo built this place! He knows every brick, every pipe, every shadow! We aren't locking him out... we are locked in here with him!"

Meanwhile, at the Ridgewood safe house, Lorenzo sat around a detailed blueprint of the mansion laid out on the dining table.

Daniel Cross was typing rapidly on his laptop. "Vincent has cut off all external phone lines and locked down the electronic gates. He’s brought in heavy military gear."

"He thinks I will attack through the main gates like a fool," Lorenzo said, tracing a finger across the floor plans. "He forgot about the water system."

Sophia, who was standing nearby pouring coffee, paused. "The water system?"

"The estate draws its fresh water from an underground artesian well located near the north woods," Lorenzo explained. "There is a maintenance access shaft that leads directly into the cellar boiler room."

"The cellar," Sophia whispered, remembering the cold, dark room where Emma had found him.

"Yes," Lorenzo nodded. "That's how we enter."

Marcus walked over with a tactical vest and handed it to Lorenzo. "Anthony and I will lead the breach. Daniel will disable their security cameras from the outside. But Boss... what about Sophia and Emma?"

Lorenzo turned to Sophia. He stepped close to her, taking both of her hands in his.

"You stay here with Dr. Reed," Lorenzo said softly. "The safe house is secure. Once this night is over, I will come back for you."

Sophia looked into his dark eyes, her fingers tightening around his. "Don't say it like that. Promise me you'll come back."

Lorenzo looked at her, his heart swelling with an emotion he had denied himself for years. He leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss against her forehead.

"I promise," Lorenzo whispered.

From the hallway, little Emma peeked out, holding her stuffed rabbit. "Mr. Lorenzo? Are you going to fight the bad man who broke my scissors?"

Lorenzo knelt down in front of the little girl, reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a small velvet box and opened it. Inside was a brand-new pair of child-safe safety scissors made of shiny silver steel, with tiny emeralds embedded in the handles.

Emma gasped, her eyes wide with delight. "For me?"

"For you, Emma," Lorenzo smiled gently. "Because a brave girl needs proper tools to protect her mother."

Emma hugged his neck tightly. "Bring back Biscuit the cat, okay?"

Lorenzo chuckled softly, kissing her cheek. "I will bring Biscuit back too."
