Chapter 6 - The Public Confrontation

“Alexander,” Lord Charles greeted, his voice loud enough to draw the attention of the surrounding aristocrats, judges, and corporate titans. “How bold of you to show your face tonight after the scandalous reports circulating about your household.”

Charles was a tall, thin man in his late fifties with sharp, aristocratic features and a cruel, thin-lipped mouth. Beside him, Lady Eleanor looked at Grace with pure venom, though she kept her mouth shut under the lingering threat of Alexander’s financial sanctions.

Alexander didn't blink. He stood tall, his grip on Grace’s hand firm and steady.

“Scandals created by desperate men holding empty bank accounts, Charles?” Alexander responded, his voice cool and clear, echoing easily over the classical violin music playing in the background. “I would think you’d be more concerned with your upcoming debt restructuring hearing with the Bank of England than my household.”

A few subtle titters of laughter erupted from nearby business leaders. Charles’s face flushed a deep, angry crimson.

“Do not play games with me, Alexander!” Charles sneered, dropping all pretense of polite manners. He turned his glare onto Grace, looking her up and down with disgust. “And you bring this woman here? A low-born girl who was investigated for theft in your own house two weeks ago? Is this the environment my late sister’s children are being raised in?”

Grace felt the heat of a hundred eyes burning into her back. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but she remembered Alexander’s words from the car. She lifted her chin, looked Charles dead in the eye, and spoke in a clear, composed voice that shocked the surrounding crowd.

“I was not investigated for theft, Lord Charles,” Grace stated calmly. “I was the target of a staged frame-up executed by a corrupt valet who was paid off by a offshore account linked directly to your holding company.”

The ballroom erupted into hushed, shocked gasps.

Charles went pale. “What?! How dare you make such a slanderous accusation, you insolent servant!”

“It is not an accusation, Charles. It is a sworn affidavit currently sitting on the desk of the High Court Senior Magistrate,” Alexander declared, pulling a folded legal document from his tuxedo pocket and holding it up for everyone to see.

“The police have already traced the money trail. Mrs. Higgins and Marcus signed full confessions yesterday morning. They identified you as the mastermind behind the attempt to fabricate evidence of neglect in my home.”

Charles stammered, looking frantically around the room at the influential judges and political leaders who were now staring at him with undisguised contempt. “That... that is a lie! Fabricated evidence! You bought those confessions!”

“And what about this?” Grace added, pulling her smartphone from her small clutch bag. She tapped the screen and held it out toward a nearby group of high-court justices who were watching the confrontation.

On the screen, a high-definition video began to play. It was the raw footage of Iris taking her steps in the nursery, her tiny face filled with radiant joy as Grace caught her in a warm, loving embrace.

“This is the 'neglect' happening in the Whitmore home, My Lords,” Grace said softly to the judges. “Iris Whitmore took her first steps under my care. She is thriving, she is safe, and she is loved. Lord Charles doesn't care about her health. He cares about the five-million-pound trust fund he can no longer access.”

One of the senior High Court justices stepped forward, looked at the video, then looked at Charles with cold disgust. “Lord Sterling, if this is the evidence you based your emergency custody petition on, I suggest you withdraw it immediately before the court charges you with malicious prosecution and perjury.”

Charles backed away, his hands trembling with rage and humiliation. Lady Eleanor shrank back into the crowd, covering her face from the flashing cameras of the society journalists who were hungrily capturing every second of the aristocratic downfall.

“This isn't over, Alexander!” Charles spat out, his voice cracking with desperation as he turned and fled toward the exit, completely ruined in the eyes of London society.

Alexander turned to Grace. In front of the entire ballroom, in front of the cameras, the judges, and the lords of the realm, he lifted her hand to his lips and pressed a warm, lingering kiss against her knuckles.

“You were brilliant,” he murmured, his eyes blazing with admiration and something far deeper, far warmer than mere gratitude.

Grace flushed, her heart leaping into her throat as she looked into the eyes of the man who had just stood by her side and shattered her enemies.
