Chapter 4 - The Conspiracy Exposed

The air in the study turned instantly frigid.
Grace gasped, standing up from her chair. “Custody? He wants to take the twins away from you?”
Alexander’s face transformed into an impenetrable mask of pure, lethal anger. Lord Charles Sterling had been a thorn in his side since Victoria’s death. Charles was a high-spending, heavily indebted nobleman who had spent the last three years trying to gain control over the multi-million-pound trust fund Victoria had left directly to the twins. As long as Alexander was their sole legal guardian, Charles couldn't touch a single penny of the child trust. But if Charles could prove Alexander was negligent—using a 'thieving' nanny as evidence of a chaotic household—he could petition the High Court for guardianship.
“So,” Alexander said softly, his voice sharp as a razor blade. “My mother was merely a pawn in Charles’s game, or perhaps an eager accomplice because she dislikes Grace’s common background.”
“Lady Eleanor was promised a seat on the board of the Sterling Trust if Charles took over guardianship,” Vance confirmed, handing Alexander a stack of printed financial logs. “We found the agreement in Mrs. Higgins’s encrypted text messages.”
Grace felt a wave of nausea wash over her. She had come to this house six months ago simply looking for a job to pay off her younger brother’s medical bills after his kidney surgery. She had poured her heart into caring for two motherless little girls, only to find herself trapped in the middle of a ruthless aristocratic war for money and power.
“Mr. Whitmore,” Grace said, her voice shaking with righteous indignation. “They are using those sweet little girls as bargaining chips! It’s disgusting!”
Alexander looked at her, noticing how her fear had instantly vanished, replaced by an intense, protective instinct for his daughters. She wasn't worried about herself; she was worried about Iris and Clara.
“They will not succeed, Grace,” Alexander said with absolute certainty. He walked over to his desk, picked up his pen, and signed a document Vance had brought. “Vance, fire Mrs. Higgins and Marcus immediately. Serve them with non-disclosure agreements with heavy financial penalty clauses and hand the evidence over to the police. As for my mother and Julian...”
Alexander paused, his gray eyes flashing with unyielding coldness.
“Tell my mother that her monthly allowance from the Whitmore Estate is suspended indefinitely. And inform Julian that his position at Whitmore Global Development is terminated as of five o'clock today. If either of them sets foot on this property without my express written permission, security is to treat them as trespassers.”
“Understood, sir,” Vance bowed and exited the room, closing the door behind him.
Grace stood near the fireplace, stunned by the swift, merciless speed with which Alexander had stripped his own family of their power.
Alexander walked back over to her. The harshness in his face melted away the moment he looked at her.
“I am sorry you were dragged into this filth, Grace,” he said, his voice genuine and warm. “You came here to give my daughters a light, and my family tried to throw you into the mud.”
“I don't care about their mud, Mr. Whitmore,” Grace said softly, looking up into his eyes. “I only care about Iris and Clara. Lord Charles will not stop here, will he?”
“No,” Alexander admitted, stepping closer to her. “Charles is desperate. His debts are mounting. He will strike again, likely through the courts or the press. He will try to paint this house as unstable.”
He looked down at her, a strange, powerful energy passing between them in the quiet study.
“Which is why I need to ask something of you, Grace. Something that goes far beyond your original job description as a nanny.”
Grace didn't hesitate. “Anything for the girls.”
Alexander took a deep breath. “I need you to stay. Not just as a staff member, but as their primary caretaker with full authority over their schedule, their medical team, and their home environment. I am firing the agency consultants. I am placing my trust entirely in you.”
He reached out and, for the first time, gently touched her hand. His fingers were warm, strong, and reassuring.
“Will you stand with me against them, Grace?”
May you like
Grace felt a shiver run down her spine—not from fear, but from the overwhelming sense of purpose and the electric pulse of connection between them.
“I will stand with you, Alexander,” she whispered, using his first name for the very first time.
