Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gala

Two weeks passed. The atmosphere inside the Kensington mansion underwent a complete transformation.

With Lady Eleanor, Julian, and the corrupt staff removed, the house felt lighter, warmer, and filled with life. Grace worked tirelessly with Iris every morning. By the end of the second week, Iris was walking across the entirety of the nursery with only the light touch of Grace’s pinky finger for guidance. Clara, the second twin, trailed behind them like a cheerful little puppy, clapping her hands every time her sister stood tall.

Alexander, who previously worked fifteen-hour days in his corporate tower, began coming home every evening by six o'clock. He sat on the floor with Grace and the girls, laughing, playing with wooden blocks, and watching his daughters thrive. For the first time since his wife’s death, the shadow of grief over his heart began to dissolve, replaced by a deep, growing admiration for the remarkable woman who had brought sunshine back into his world.

However, the storm outside was brewing.

Lord Charles Sterling had officially filed a petition with the High Court requesting a review of Alexander’s custody arrangements, citing 'emotional neglect and unstable household management.' To make matters worse, Charles had orchestrated a media smear campaign, leaking twisted rumors to high-society tabloids about the 'mysterious, unvetted nanny' living under Alexander Whitmore’s roof.

To squash the rumors and present a united, powerful front, Alexander decided to attend the annual Royal Children’s Hospital Charity Gala—the most prestigious high-society event of the London season.

“You are coming with me, Grace,” Alexander stated as they sat in the library one evening, reviewing Iris’s physical therapy logs.

Grace looked up in surprise. “To the gala? Alexander, I am a nanny. I don't belong in a ballroom with lords and dukes.”

“You belong wherever my children’s future is being decided,” Alexander said firmly. He leaned across the small table, his dark eyes fixing her with unshakeable conviction. “Charles intends to use the gala to rally society support against me. He wants to paint you as a shadow in my house. I want the world to see the woman who actually saved my family.”

The next evening, a sleek black Rolls-Royce pulled up to the red carpet outside the historic Guildhall in central London. Photographers’ light flashes exploded like lightning against the night sky as London’s elite arrived in silk, diamonds, and tailored tuxedos.

The rear door of the Rolls-Royce opened. Alexander stepped out first, looking devastatingly handsome in a custom charcoal tuxedo. He turned and extended his hand into the vehicle.

Grace placed her gloved hand in his and stepped out onto the red carpet.

A collective gasp echoed through the crowd of photographers.

Grace was breathtaking. Alexander had arranged for London’s top designer to fit her in a floor-length emerald green silk gown that complimented her skin tone perfectly. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, soft updo, revealing the graceful line of her neck. She carried herself with a quiet, natural dignity that completely outshone the artificial glamour of the high-society women around her.

Alexander tucked her hand securely into the crook of his arm, his fingers pressing reassuringly against hers. “Hold your head high, Grace. You are worth ten of every person in this room.”

As they walked through the grand double doors into the glittering ballroom, the room went instantly quiet. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry leaves.

At the far side of the ballroom, standing near the champagne tower, Lord Charles Sterling stood with Lady Eleanor and Julian. Charles’s face twisted in fury as he saw Alexander enter—not alone, and not defeated—but looking like a king accompanied by a woman who looked every bit a queen.

Charles set his champagne glass down with a heavy thud and began marching across the polished floor toward them, his eyes dark with malice.
