Chapter 14 - The Hunt in Lucerne

The snow was falling thick and heavy over the cobblestone streets of Lucerne, Switzerland. The ancient wooden Chapel Bridge arched over the dark, freezing waters of the Reuss River, surrounded by snow-covered mountain peaks that looked like jagged teeth against the night sky.

Inside the private executive dining room of the Hotel Montana, Julian Vance sat near a roaring fireplace, swirling a glass of thirty-year-old Scotch. Across from him sat two men in dark, expensive suits—representatives of the Vanguard Global Real Estate Syndicate, an offshore investment group known for purchasing historic European properties and turning them into luxury commercial resorts.

"The title transfer will be completed by next Friday," Julian said, his voice smooth with victory. "The Whitmore family is trapped. Alexander cannot contest the 1994 collateral deed without dragging his late father's name through a massive fraud trial in London. He will settle out of court and hand over the estate grounds for twelve million pounds."

"And the manor house?" the lead developer asked, cutting into a thick steak. "Our board requires total clearance. We plan to build a five-star spa and helicopter pad on the main lawn where the gardens are."

Julian smiled, raising his glass. "Flatten it. Burn the trees for all I care. Just make sure the money hits my account in the Cayman Islands before the end of the month."

Before the developer could raise his glass in return, the heavy oak doors of the private dining room swung open.

The hotel’s private security detail stepped aside as Alexander Whitmore walked into the room, flanked by two sharp-looking Swiss attorneys and Ryan, his imposing head of security.

Julian didn't flinch, though his eyes narrowed slightly. He set his glass down on the table, leaning back in his leather chair with his silver cane resting against his knee.

"Alexander," Julian drawled. "You flew all the way to Switzerland just to watch me drink your family's money? I'm flattered."

"Gentlemen," Alexander said, addressing the two developers, ignoring Julian completely. "I suggest you stand up, step away from that table, and leave this room. You are negotiating a contract with a man who currently has an active international arrest warrant issued by the Swiss Federal Police for bank fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement."

The two developers froze. They looked at Julian, then at the thick legal portfolio Alexander’s Swiss attorney laid on the table between them.

"What is this nonsense?" Julian snapped, standing up, his smooth demeanor slipping into a sharp, ugly glare. "I hold the legal trustee power of the Vance family estate! Stamped by Lady Catherine Whitmore herself!"

"You held it until three o'clock yesterday afternoon, Mr. Pendelton," Alexander’s attorney stated in clear, crisp English. "Lady Catherine executed a full legal revocation affidavit in Scotland, witnessing that her signature was obtained under criminal misrepresentation. Furthermore, the Swiss Federal Banking Authority has seized all assets held under the Vance-Pendelton trust account in Lucerne."

Julian’s face drained of color, turning as white as the snow falling outside the window. "That’s impossible! Catherine is incompetent! She’s locked in an asylum!"

"She is legally competent enough to recognize the son of her husband's former embezzler," Alexander said, taking three slow, deliberate steps toward Julian.

Alexander stood over the table, his imposing six-foot-two frame casting a dark shadow over Julian.

"Your father, Arthur Pendelton, died in a British prison ten years ago, Julian," Alexander said, his voice quiet, deep, and laced with absolute authority. "He died broke, bitter, and forgotten. You spent ten years crafting this scheme, manipulating my uncle Edward while he was suffering from dementia in Geneva, stealing documents from dead men, hoping you could pull down the Whitmore name and take the wealth your father was sent to jail for trying to steal."

Julian gritted his teeth, his jaw working violently. He grabbed his silver-topped walking cane with both hands, his knuckles turning white.

"It belonged to us!" Julian spat, his voice losing all its aristocratic polish, exposing the raw, bitter gutter rage underneath. "Your father lived in luxury while my father rotted in a cell! Richard Whitmore built his empire on money my father managed! I deserved that land! I deserved that estate!"

"Your father was a thief, Julian," Alexander said softly. "And you are just a small, desperate shadow running through dark rooms trying to steal what better men built."

Julian suddenly lunged forward, unsheathing a narrow, sixteen-inch steel blade hidden inside the wooden shaft of his walking cane, driving it directly toward Alexander’s chest.

"Alexander!" Ryan roared, lunging forward.

But Alexander didn't step back.

Having trained in defensive martial arts since his youth at Cambridge, Alexander stepped inside the arc of the strike, his left hand catching Julian’s wrist with the speed of a striking cobra. He twisted Julian’s arm downward, forcing the blade away, while his right palm struck Julian directly in the center of his chest.

The impact sent Julian flying backward over the dining table, shattering glasses, plates, and wine bottles in a chaotic cascade of crystal and dark red liquid.

Julian hit the hardwood floor hard, gasping for air, the hidden sword clattering across the floor near the fireplace.

Before he could push himself up, two armed Swiss Federal Police officers rushed through the oak doors, pinning Julian to the floor, snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

Alexander stood over him, unbuttoning his coat, adjusting his silk tie without a single hair out of place.

"Take him away," Alexander ordered calmly to the officers. "And ensure his legal team understands that the Whitmore legal division will be pursuing maximum sentences in both Switzerland and Great Britain."

As the officers dragged a screaming, cursing Julian out of the dining room into the cold hotel corridor, Alexander walked over to the grand window looking out over Lucerne.

He pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed speed dial.

"Grace?" Alexander spoke, his voice instantly softening into a warm, gentle melody.

"Is it over, Alexander?" Grace’s voice came through the line, clear, peaceful, and warm against the cold Swiss night.

Alexander looked out at the quiet snow falling over the river. "It is over, my love. The estate is secure. The Vance trust is closed forever."

"Come home, Alexander," Grace whispered softly. "The children are waiting for you. And Iris scored two more goals in her match today."

Alexander let out a soft, deep laugh—a sound filled with pure relief, joy, and unbroken pride. "I’m coming home, Grace. I'm coming home."
