Chapter 2 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Alexander slid his finger across the high-resolution touchscreen, bringing up the infrared footage of the secondary east wing corridor.

Lady Eleanor crossed her arms, her chin held high, though her knuckles had turned white against her designer handbag. Julian shifted his weight from foot to foot, glancing subtly toward the grand front exit.

“At 3:15 PM,” Alexander read off the digital timestamp, his voice flat and analytical, “Grace was in the nursery with Iris and Clara. The nursery camera confirms she never left the room until four o'clock when the children took their afternoon nap.”

He tapped the screen again.

“At 3:42 PM, however, a figure enters the staff corridor carrying a velvet jewelry pouch.” Alexander paused, turning the phone screen toward his mother and brother. “Look closely, Julian. That appears to be your personal valet, Marcus.”

Julian cleared his throat loudly. “Marcus? Well... he was likely hanging up my suit! That proves nothing—”

“Marcus enters the coatroom at 3:42 PM,” Alexander cut in, his voice dropping an octave, becoming deadlier with every word. “He remains inside for twenty seconds. He exits empty-handed. At 4:10 PM, Mrs. Higgins walks in, directly targets Grace’s coat hanging on the third peg, pulls the bracelet out, and immediately walks straight to my mother’s sitting room without even checking the other coats.”

Grace gasped softly, her hand moving to her throat. She looked at the screen, then at Eleanor, realization dawning on her face.

Alexander closed his phone with a sharp snap and slid it back into his pocket. He looked at the two security guards standing by the door.

“Detain Marcus and Mrs. Higgins in the west study,” Alexander commanded quietly. “And call my personal legal team. I want full depositions taken before midnight.”

The security guards hesitated for a split second, looking at Eleanor, but Alexander stepped forward, his massive frame radiating absolute authority. “Now.”

The guards bowed their heads nervously and hurried down the hall to carry out his orders.

Lady Eleanor’s face flushed red with humiliation. “Alexander! How dare you treat my staff like criminals in front of this... this servant! Marcus has served our family for five years!”

“Then Marcus will have five minutes to explain why he was planting your jewelry in my nanny’s pocket,” Alexander snapped, turning on his mother with cold fury. “Did you really think I wouldn't check, Mother? Did you think I was so blind, so consumed by my work, that I would let you destroy the only person in this house who actually cares for my daughters?”

Eleanor scoffed, trying to maintain her aristocratic composure. “She is a paid employee, Alexander! She is paid to care for them! You are losing your mind over a common girl from the East End!”

“She is the woman,” Alexander said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper as he stepped directly into Eleanor’s space, “who just got my daughter to walk five steps when your top Harley Street specialists said it would take years.”

The room went dead silent.

Eleanor froze. Julian’s eyes widened in genuine shock.

Grace looked up at Alexander, her heart pounding against her ribs. He knew. He had seen the footage.

“What... what did you say?” Eleanor stammered, her voice losing its icy edge for the first time. “Iris walked?”

“Yes,” Alexander said, his eyes burning with suppressed emotion. “Yesterday afternoon. While I was in New York reviewing legal files, Grace was on her knees on the floor, giving my child the courage her own grandmother never bothered to offer. And today, you tried to frame her for theft because she doesn't fit your ridiculous idea of high-society pedigree.”

Alexander turned his back on his mother and brother, completely dismissing them. He looked at Grace, his expression softening instantly into something warm, deep, and fiercely protective.

“Grace,” he said gently. “Please step into my study. We have things to discuss.”

Grace swallowed the lump in her throat, nodded silently, and followed the most powerful billionaire in London down the long, mahogany-lined hallway, leaving the disgraced Whitmore matriarch standing in shattered silence.
