Chapter 7 - The Trial of Jason Vance

The criminal trial of Jason Vance took place in November at the Municipal Justice Building.

Jason attempted to represent himself pro se after three court-appointed attorneys withdrew from his case due to his refusal to accept a plea bargain.

On the first day of testimony, the courtroom was standing-room only. Journalists filled the gallery, fascinated by the story of the former executive who had fallen from luxury into total legal catastrophe.

Jason stood at the defense table in a bright orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to his waist, his face thin, haggard, and unkempt.

I was called as the prosecution's star witness.

I walked up to the witness stand in a dark, elegant charcoal suit, taking the oath with my right hand raised firm and clear.

Deputy District Attorney Chen led the questioning. "Mrs. Sterling, please identify the document currently marked as Exhibit A."

"It is a fraudulent temporary custody order dated four years ago," I testified, my voice carrying clearly throughout the silent courtroom.

"Did you sign this document?"

"I did not," I replied. "My middle name is misspelled on line three, my signature was traced from an old lease agreement, and the notary seal was applied using a stamp that was manufactured eight months after my parents' death."

Jason stood up at the defense table, rattling his hand chains against the wood. "Objection! She's lying! She gave me the child because she was broke! She was living out of her car!"

"Mr. Vance, sit down and keep quiet or I will have you removed," Judge Reyes warned sternly from the bench.

Chen turned back to me. "Mrs. Sterling, did you ever abandon your daughter?"

I looked directly across the courtroom into Jason’s bloodshot, desperate eyes.

"I never abandoned her," I said slowly and clearly. "I was robbed of her by a man who forged a judicial document because he was too weak to earn his own living and too cowardly to face me as an equal."

The gallery murmured. Jason slumped back into his chair, his jaw hanging open, unable to utter another word.
