Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Thread

The sun set over the hills, casting a deep golden glow across the lawn of our home.
It was Lily’s twelfth birthday.
The garden was decorated with fairy lights, yellow lanterns, and white ribbon. A large cake sat on the long wooden patio table, surrounded by her friends from school, my aunt, Mara, and our team of architects and managers.
Lily blew out the twelve candles on her cake while everyone cheered and applauded.
After the guests had gone inside to play music and eat dessert, I walked down to the edge of the garden where a marble bench sat beneath an old oak tree.
I sat down, pulling my father’s old pocket watch from my coat. I opened the brass casing, looking at the tiny black-and-white photograph of my mother and father smiling back at me from thirty years ago.
Soft footsteps sounded on the grass behind me.
Lily sat down on the bench beside me, leaning her head gently against my shoulder. She was wearing a simple white lace dress, her golden hair caught in the soft evening breeze.
"What are you looking at, Mom?" she asked quietly.
I held out the watch so she could see the photograph.
"I was showing your grandparents how well you're growing up," I said, kissing the top of her head.
Lily smiled, tracing her finger over the polished brass edge of the watch.
"They would be proud of you, Mom," she whispered. "You saved us."
"We saved each other, baby," I said, putting the watch back into my pocket, wrapping my arm around her shoulders as we looked out at the peaceful, brightly lit valley below.

The nightmare was over. The debt was settled. The justice was absolute.
And as the stars came out one by one over the quiet hills, I knew that no storm, no lie, and no forged paper in the world could ever break the thread that held us together.
