Chapter 2 - The Lake House Siege

The iron gates of the Hale Lakefront Estate were closed, but the heavy wrought-iron bar had been left unlocked.

At 1:15 AM, three state police cruisers pulled up behind my SUV, their emergency lights flashing red and blue against the dark pine trees. Mara Quinn stepped out of the lead police cruiser, holding a wet, freshly signed emergency court order from the duty judge.

Detective Vance, a senior investigator from the Major Crimes Division, walked up to my window. "Mrs. Sterling, stay behind us until we clear the perimeter."

I didn't answer. I unbuckled my belt and stepped out onto the wet gravel, my eyes fixed on the illuminated upper-story window of the three-story timber manor.

A shadow moved behind the curtain.

Detective Vance pounded his heavy fist against the solid oak front door. "State Police! We have an emergency judicial writ for the immediate surrender of a minor child, Lily Vance! Open the door!"

Silence fell over the lake.

Then, the heavy door swung open. Vanessa Hale stood in the foyer, wearing a silk robe, holding a crystal glass of scotch. Her blonde hair was immaculate, but her eyes were wild, red-rimmed, and glassy.

"What is the meaning of this intrusion?" Vanessa hissed, glaring past the officers straight at me. "Clara? How dare you bring police officers to my private property!"

"Where is my daughter, Vanessa?" I asked, stepping onto the porch, my boots leaving wet prints on her pristine Italian tile.

"She’s sleeping!" Jason’s voice boomed from the top of the grand mahogany staircase.

He walked down slowly, wearing a cashmere sweater, trying to project his old, smug authority. But his hands were shoved deep into his pockets, and his jaw was clenching rhythmically.

"Clara, you're trespassing," Jason said, pointing a finger at me. "We have a binding custody order—"

"You mean this one?" Mara Quinn stepped forward, slapping a laminated copy of the backdated document directly onto the foyer table. "The one bearing Commission Number 408912? The commission issued eight months after the date on this paper?"

Jason’s face turned gray. His eyes darted from Mara to Detective Vance.

"Search the house," Detective Vance ordered his officers. "Find the child."

"You can't do that without a warrant!" Vanessa shrieked, dropping her scotch glass, shattering it across the floor.

"We have the search warrant right here, Ms. Hale," Detective Vance replied, pulling a folded document from his coat. "Along with an arrest warrant for Jason Vance for felony child concealment and document fraud."

A faint metallic thump sounded from the second-floor hallway.

"MOM!"

My heart exploded. I pushed past Jason, ignoring his outstretched arm, and ran up the stairs three at a time.
