Chapter 3 - The Reunion in the Dark

"LILY!"
I followed her voice down a long, dimly lit hallway lined with expensive oil paintings. At the far end, a heavy oak door was locked from the outside with a brass deadbolt slide.
"I’m in here! Mom, I’m here!"
My hands shook violently as I grabbed the brass slide, throwing it back with a loud, metallic clatter. I slammed the door open.
The room was small, cold, and lit only by a bedside lamp. Lily was standing near the closet, clutching an old blue paper folder to her chest. She looked taller, her golden hair fell past her shoulders, and her dark eyes were wide with terror—and then, with pure, unadulterated recognition.
"Mommy..." she sobbed.
I dropped to my knees on the hardwood floor, reaching out my arms.
Lily flew across the room, burying her face into the crook of my neck. Her arms wrapped around my shoulders so tightly I could barely draw breath, but it was the sweetest pain I had ever felt in my life.
"I'm here, baby," I whispered, holding her back, kissing her head, her face, her tear-stained cheeks. "I'm here. Nobody is ever taking you away again. Never."
"I saved the folder, Mom," Lily cried, pressing the blue paper document into my hands. "Dad tried to burn it in the fireplace downstairs, but I took it out of his briefcase when he was shouting at Vanessa!"
I opened the blue folder under the soft lamp light.
Inside lay the original stock certificate of Hale Enterprises, bearing my father’s signature and a sealed trust declaration establishing that twenty percent of the holding company belonged to the Clara Sterling Living Trust.
Downstairs, the sound of shouting echoed up the stairwell, followed by the heavy, unmistakable CLACK of steel handcuffs snapping closed around human wrists.

I lifted Lily into my arms, standing tall.
"Let's go home, sweetheart," I said softly. "We have work to do."
