Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Hale

The collapse was swift, total, and merciless.
Within forty-eight hours of the boardroom meeting, federal prosecutors unsealed a twelve-count indictment against Vanessa Hale and Jason Vance. The charges included wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, document forgery, and custodial interference.
Because Vanessa had used corporate assets to bribe the private investigator who helped hide Lily for four years, her father’s company was subjected to a full federal receivership.
I sat in my office with Mara Quinn, reviewing the receiver's report.
"Hale Enterprises is filing for Chapter 11 reorganization," Mara reported, taking a sip of tea. "The court has appointed you as the primary creditor representative. You now control seventy percent of their remaining commercial real estate assets."
"And Vanessa?" I asked.
"Vanessa’s bail was set at five million dollars," Mara said with a sharp smile. "Because her personal accounts were frozen under the Asset Forfeiture Act, she couldn't post bond. She’s currently sharing a cell block with three other inmates at the women's facility."
I looked out the window at the skyline. Four years ago, I was kneeling in the wet grass of a cemetery, clutching a man's coat, begging for my child while these people laughed at my poverty.
