Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Raid

Seventy-two hours later, the rain had cleared, leaving a bright, cold blue sky over the downtown financial district.

At 10:00 AM, the board of directors of Hale Enterprises was convened in the executive suite on the 40th floor of the Hale Tower.

Vanessa Hale sat at the head of the long glass table, her lawyer sitting beside her, trying desperately to calm her down. Her father, Richard Hale, the aging founder of the firm, sat across from her, looking pale and exhausted as news reporters gathered outside the building entrance downstairs.

Jason was not present; he was being held without bail at the county jail following his arraignment on federal fraud charges.

"This board meeting will come to order," Richard Hale said, his voice faint. "We are here to address the emergency freeze placed on our corporate credit facilities following the arrest of—"

The double glass doors to the boardroom glided open.

I walked in, flanked by Mara Quinn and two forensic accountants carrying leather briefcases. I wore a tailored midnight-blue suit, my hair pulled back tightly, carrying my father’s blue folder in my right hand.

"Clara Sterling," Vanessa spat, slamming her pen onto the table. "Security! Get this woman out of here!"

"Security works for the majority shareholder, Ms. Hale," Mara Quinn announced calmly, laying a certified copy of the Chancery Court injunction on the table. "And as of 8:00 AM today, your security guards report directly to Clara."

Richard Hale stood up slowly, staring at the blue folder in my hands. "Clara... is that Arthur’s file?"

"It is, Mr. Hale," I said, walking to the foot of the table, placing both hands flat on the polished glass. "My father, Arthur Sterling, loaned you two million dollars in seed capital thirty years ago to found this company. In exchange, he received twenty percent of the voting equity."

"That stock was repurchased four years ago!" Vanessa argued, her voice rising to a panic. "Jason presented the redemption paperwork signed by Clara!"

"Jason forged my signature using a backdated power of attorney while my father lay dying in the ICU," I replied coldly. "And then he used those stolen shares as collateral to finance your luxury real-estate development on Pine Lake."

Mara Quinn pulled a thick stack of bank audit sheets from her bag.

"Furthermore," Mara added, "our forensic team completed an audit of Hale Enterprises' general ledger last night. Over the past four years, Vanessa Hale and Jason Vance embezzled six point five million dollars of corporate funds through offshore shell companies in Nevis to pay off Jason's personal debts and cover up their illegal land acquisitions."

Richard Hale looked at his daughter, his eyes filled with total heartbreak. "Vanessa... is this true?"

Vanessa couldn't answer. She turned her head away, her lips trembling as her lawyer placed a hand over her arm and whispered, "Don't say another word."

I looked around the table at the silent, terrified board members.

"Under Section 301 of the State Corporations Code," I declared, "I am exercising my voting right to call an immediate vote of no confidence. Vanessa Hale is removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."
