Chapter 4 - A Grandmother's Regret

The next morning, the blizzard subsided, leaving a glittering blanket of white across the Colorado mountains. I walked down to the grand dining room to collect the children's coats, intending to head straight for the helipad.

Instead, I found Eleanor sitting alone at the dining table, crying quietly over an old photo album.

"Kesha..." she wept, looking up. "I didn't know. Daniel told me you had terminated the pregnancy and taken a cash settlement to leave the country. He lied to me for eight years."

I stood at the edge of the room, my heart softening slightly for the elderly woman. Eleanor had always been strict, but I realized now she had been a victim of her son's sociopathic lies.

"He covered his tracks because he was a coward, Eleanor," I said gently.

"I know," Eleanor sobbed. "And I enabled him by never questioning his story. Please... Kesha. I am old. I don't know how many Christmases I have left. I don't ask you to forgive Daniel. He deserves whatever misery comes his way. But please... do not deny me the chance to know my grandchildren."

She pushed a velvet folder across the table toward me. I opened it. It was a legally binding document placing forty percent of the Reynolds family fortune and estate into an irrevocable trust fund for Noah, Ethan, Sophia, and Olivia—completely bypassing Daniel.

"I cannot buy their love," Eleanor said softly. "But I can ensure that what is rightfully theirs is never taken by Daniel."
