Chapter 10 - The Brightest Christmas

It was Christmas Eve once again. Ten years since Daniel had left; two years since the fateful helicopter landing in Colorado.
Snow was falling softly outside our lakefront home in Texas—a rare, magical southern winter. The giant evergreen in our living room was adorned with hundreds of hand-painted ornaments created by the kids over the years.
Laughter filled the house. Noah and Ethan were competing in a game of chess in the library, while Sophia and Olivia were decorating gingerbread houses with Eleanor in the kitchen.
My phone chimed on the mantelpiece. It was a notification from a news feed.
Former Reynolds Corp Executive Daniel Reynolds Enters Rehabilitation Program, Working as Junior Manager at Regional Firm.
I closed the article without feeling a single pang of anger or bitterness. Daniel was finally taking responsibility for his own life, far away from ours. I wished him peace, but he was merely a distant memory in the background of a story he was no longer part of.
"Mama! Come look!" Olivia called out, running into the living room and grabbing my hand.
I walked into the kitchen as the clock struck midnight. The children gathered around the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the silent snow glitter under the starlight.
"What are you wishing for this year?" I asked, putting my arms around Noah and Sophia, while Ethan and Olivia leaned against my sides. Eleanor stood nearby, watching us with tears of quiet gratitude in her eyes.

"Nothing," Noah smiled, looking up at me with those bright sapphire eyes. "We already have everything."
I pulled my four children close, feeling the warmth of their hugs and the rhythm of their peaceful heartbeats. The frightened young woman who had been abandoned eight years ago was gone forever. In her place stood a woman surrounded by an unbreakable legacy of strength, boundless prosperity, and a love that no storm could ever erase.
