Chapter 2 - Snowbound Tensions

Before anyone could make another move, the wind outside roared with fierce intensity. Heavy snow rattled the massive windows. A butler nervously stepped into the hallway, clearing his throat.

"Mr. Reynolds... Mrs. Reynolds... the mountain pass has just been closed by the state highway patrol. The blizzard has hit full force. No vehicles—or aircraft—can leave the estate until tomorrow morning."

My heart sank for a brief second. A winter storm had trapped us inside the very house of the man who had abandoned us.

"You can stay in the east wing," Eleanor said hastily, standing up on unsteady legs. Her eyes were fixed entirely on the children. "Please, Kesha. Whatever Daniel did... I am their grandmother. Let us accommodate you for the night. The children shouldn't be freezing out in the storm."

I looked down at my four little ones. They were brave, but their small hands were chilly. I nodded once. "We will stay in the east guest suite. But make no mistake, Eleanor—we are guests, not family."

Daniel stood frozen near the fireplace, staring at the quadruplets as if looking at ghosts. "Kesha... please. Can we just talk?"

"There is nothing left to talk about, Daniel," I replied smoothly, taking Sophia and Olivia by the hand while Noah and Ethan walked proudly ahead of me. "You made your decision eight years ago. I am simply letting you live with it."
