Chapter 1 - The Question That Shattered the Room

"Are you the daddy who didn't want us?"

The innocent, clear voice of eight-year-old Ethan echoed against the soaring vaulted ceilings of the Reynolds mansion. The words hung in the freezing indoor air like broken glass.

Daniel looked as if he had been struck. The velvet box containing an engagement ring dropped from his numb fingers, hitting the hardwood floor with a soft thud before rolling across the rug to stop right at my snow-dusted boots.

His girlfriend, Chloe, stared at Ethan, then at the three identical faces beside him—Noah, Sophia, and Olivia—and finally at Daniel. Her pristine expression crumbled into horror.

"Daniel..." Chloe’s voice trembled, sharp and demanding. "What is he talking about? You told me your ex-wife was obsessed, unstable, and lied about a pregnancy to trap you!"

"Chloe, wait—I can explain—" Daniel stammered, his voice utterly devoid of its usual arrogant smooth composure.

"Explain what?" I said, stepping forward, my tailored cashmere coat catching the light of their towering Christmas tree. My voice was calm, measured, and entirely free of bitterness. "Explain how you changed your phone number, signed away all parental rights in a pre-emptive legal affidavit eight years ago, and fled to Europe before my first ultrasound because you claimed four heartbeats were 'statistically impossible' without cheating?"

The room gasped. Daniel’s mother, Eleanor, fell back onto the sofa, clutching her chest. Her eyes were wide, brimming with tears as she stared at the four children—each bearing the piercing sapphire eyes and refined jawline of the Reynolds family lineage.

"Four..." Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking. "Four grandchildren..."

"I didn't know!" Daniel shouted, panicking as he reached toward me. "Kesha, you never told me it was quadruplets!"

"You blocked my number, Daniel," I said softly, looking down at him. "You sent your lawyers to deliver a court order forbidding me from contacting you. You ran. Today, you invited me here thinking I was a broken, single woman who would beg for your scraps. But as you can see... my life is full."

Chloe grabbed her designer bag from the side table. "You're a monster, Daniel. We are over." She slammed the heavy oak door behind her, leaving a suffocating silence in her wake.
