Chapter 9 - Rising from the Ashes

Two years passed.
Life returned with an abundant, beautiful warmth. I was appointed Chief Medical Officer of the entire St. Jude’s Hospital Network—the youngest woman ever to hold the position. Under my leadership, we implemented strict new safeguards for maternal care and patient advocacy, ensuring that no woman would ever suffer in a delivery room the way I had.
My home was filled with light, laughter, and energy. Little Leo was now a toddler, full of curiosity, joy, and boundless health. He had my determination and an infectious smile that lit up every room he entered.
Julian Vance had stayed by my side throughout the entire ordeal—first as a colleague who stood up for what was right, then as a trusted friend, and eventually, as something much deeper. He loved Leo as if he were his own, and his gentle, unwavering support showed me what real strength and true love looked like.
One Saturday morning, as Julian was helping Leo build a towering fortress out of wooden blocks in our sunlit living room, I watched them from the kitchen with a cup of warm coffee in my hands.
"Mommy, look! It's higher than the sky!" Leo shouted, clapping his little hands in delight.

Julian laughed, adjusting a block at the base. "Only because we built a solid foundation, buddy."
Julian looked up and caught my eye, his warm brown eyes filled with deep affection.
