Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Nursery

By day five, I insisted on being transferred out of ICU to the post-natal ward so I could hold my son. The moment little Leo was placed in my arms, the icy armor around my heart melted into pure tears of love. He had thick dark hair and bright, perceptive eyes. He was whole. He was safe.

As I cradled him, the door swept open. Cameron walked in, flanked by Sophie, who was holding a clipboard.

"Amelia," Cameron said, trying to adopt an authoritative tone. "We need to discuss Leo's discharge plan and your medical leave. Sophie has prepared the administrative forms for your signature."

Sophie stepped forward, offering a sweet, sympathetic smile that made my stomach turn. "Dr. Grant, we are all so glad you survived. Dr. Bennett was simply out of his mind with worry during the delivery. We just want to help you rest."

I didn't even look at Sophie. I kept my eyes on my son as I spoke.

"Nurse," I called out to the nurse standing by the door. "Please inform security that an uncredentialed intern and a doctor under active internal investigation are in my private room without permission."

Sophie's smile vanished. "What?"

Cameron's face flushed red. "Amelia, stop this childish behavior! Internal investigation? What are you talking about?"

"The formal complaint I filed yesterday with the State Medical Board for gross negligence, medical malpractice, and falsification of patient records," I said, finally raising my eyes to meet Cameron's shocked gaze. "And the divorce papers that will be served to you by five o'clock today."
