Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The news hit St. Jude’s Hospital like a megaton bomb.

Within forty-eight hours of my formal filing, the Board of Directors suspended Cameron Bennett’s surgical privileges pending a full tribunal. The telemetry logs Julian had secured were irrefutable proof that Cameron had ignored critical protocol to spite me.

Cameron tried to confront me at my apartment after I was discharged with Leo, but my lawyer, Victoria Sterling—the fiercest family litigator in the state—met him at the front gate with a temporary restraining order.

"You can't do this!" Cameron shouted across the courtyard, his voice echoing off the brick walls as two security guards held him back. "She's my wife! That's my son!"

"She was your wife, Dr. Bennett," Victoria replied coldly, adjusting her glasses. "And right now, you are a liability to her safety and the safety of child. If you step within one hundred feet of this property again, you will spend the night in a cell."

Meanwhile, Sophie was beginning to realize that her safety net was collapsing. With Cameron suspended, the hospital administration began auditing all of Sophie's clinical records. What they found was appalling: Sophie had failed two major clinical rotations in her previous residency before transferring to St. Jude’s under Cameron's personal sponsorship.
