Chapter 6 - Desperate Measures

Cornered and facing total ruin, Sophie showed her true colors.

Late one rainy evening, while Cameron was drowning his sorrows in a bar near the medical center, Sophie came to his apartment. She tried to convince him to flee the city with her, suggesting they start a private practice somewhere far away.

"Cameron, think about it!" Sophie pleaded, grabbing his hands. "Amelia is going to ruin you! She has the entire board on her side. But we can leave together. You still have your savings!"

Cameron looked at her, his eyes bloodshot and unfocused. For months, he had viewed Sophie as a fragile, innocent victim who needed his protection from his "domineering" wife. But looking at her now—her eyes wide with manic self-preservation, completely unconcerned with the fact that his career was burned to ashes—the scales finally fell from his eyes.

"You lied to me," Cameron whispered, his voice trembling. "In the delivery room. You dropped that tray on purpose."

Sophie froze. "Cameron, no! I told you—"

"Nurse Clara gave her statement!" Cameron screamed, slamming his fist onto the coffee table. "She saw you dig your nails into Amelia’s arm! You set her up! You made me think she was attacking you!"

"She hated me!" Sophie shrieked, dropping her innocent persona entirely. "She looked down on me from the day I arrived! And you were so easy to manipulate, Cameron! You were so desperate to feel superior to your brilliant wife that all I had to do was batting my eyelashes and tell you how powerful you were!"

Cameron collapsed into a chair, burying his face in his hands as Sophie slammed the door and stormed out into the night.
