Chapter 8 - The Fall of Sophie

Sophie did not escape the storm. Following the revelation of her falsified records and testimony regarding her malicious conduct in the delivery room, the state medical board barred her from ever completing her residency or practicing medicine in any capacity.
Her attempt to sue the hospital for wrongful termination was thrown out of court, and she was slapped with civil suits from both St. Jude’s Hospital and my legal team. Ruined financially and socially blacklisted, she left the city in disgrace, her dream of climbing the medical ladder crushed beneath the weight of her own deception.
Cameron's downfall was complete. He lost his license, his reputation, his wealth, and his standing in the medical community. He was forced to sell his luxury townhouse to cover his mounting legal fees and civil damages awarded to me.
One afternoon, as I was leaving the courthouse following the final settlement of our divorce, Cameron approached me in the lobby. He looked twenty years older, his suit hanging loosely off his diminished frame.
"Amelia," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "I... I don't expect you to forgive me. I know I was a monster. I let my jealousy of your talent destroy everything."

I stopped and looked at him, feeling neither hatred nor sorrow. Just peace.
"I don't hate you, Cameron," I said softly. "Hatred requires feeling something for you. To me, you are simply a stranger who used to share my house. Leo and I have moved on."
