Chapter 9 - Justice Served

In May, the final sentencing hearings were held. Facing overwhelming evidence and the certainty of a jury conviction, all three defendants accepted formal plea deals to avoid maximum prison time.
Eleanor Sterling pleaded guilty to grand larceny and felony child endangerment. She was sentenced to four years in state prison, followed by five years of strict probation, alongside a court-ordered restitution mandate requiring her to forfeit her remaining retirement savings to pay back the stolen funds and Maya's medical bills.
Chloe Sterling pleaded guilty to conspiracy and felony endangerment, receiving two years in prison and mandatory community service.
Mark Davis received eighteen months in state prison for his role in concealing evidence and financial fraud.
As the sentence was read, there were no more outbursts, no more arrogant speeches, and no more demands for money. They had been completely broken by the weight of their own actions.
After the hearing, Arthur Vance met us in the courthouse lobby with a satisfied smile.

"It’s completely over, David," Arthur said, shaking my hand. "The restitution funds have been seized and placed into a irrevocable trust for Liam’s college education. The eviction on Eleanor’s property is complete, and the house is listed on the market. They have zero legal leverage, zero financial access, and zero presence in your lives."
We walked out of the courthouse together into the bright spring afternoon. The sun was warm against our skin, and for the first time in months, the air felt completely clean.
