Chapter 5 - Lawsuits and Frozen Assets

The following week was an absolute blitzkrieg of legal action. Arthur Vance didn't just target their criminal defense; he launched an all-out economic war against my toxic family.

For years, I had quietly owned the deed to the suburban New Jersey house where Eleanor lived, allowing her to stay there rent-free while I paid the property taxes and maintenance. I had also co-signed the lease on Chloe and Mark’s luxury Manhattan apartment and financed Mark’s failing boutique marketing firm.

Within forty-eight hours:

I served Eleanor with an emergency 30-day eviction notice for breach of contract and property destruction.

I withdrew my co-signature on Chloe’s lease, forcing the landlord to demand immediate payment for the remaining eight months or initiate eviction.

I called in a $150,000 personal loan I had granted Mark three years prior, demanding immediate repayment based on the default clause triggered by his criminal indictment.

Eleanor tried to call me fifty times a day from blocked numbers, leaving hysterical voicemails that ranged from screaming curses to sobbing pleas for mercy.

"David, please! I am your mother!" she wailed in one message. "You can't do this to your own blood! That orphan girl has brainwashed you! Think of our family legacy!"

I didn't answer a single call. Every voicemail was immediately forwarded to Detective Miller and added to the mountain of evidence proving a pattern of harassment and lack of remorse.

Meanwhile, back at the hotel penthouse, Maya was transforming. Surrounded by compassionate nurses, eating wholesome meals, and resting without fear, the color had returned to her cheeks. She held Liam in her arms, singing soft lullabies as the sunlight streamed through the panoramic windows.

"David," she said softly one evening as I sat beside her, rubbing her shoulders. "Is it bad that I don't feel guilty anymore?"

"Guilty?" I kissed the top of her head. "Maya, you spent years suffering their abuse in silence because you thought you had to earn their approval. You have nothing to feel guilty about. You are a brave, incredible mother, and you saved our son."
