Chapter 1 - Emergency Room and the Hidden Footage

The emergency room at New York-Presbyterian was bathed in harsh fluorescent light, a stark contrast to the dark, freezing apartment we had just escaped. Nurses rushed to surround Maya the moment they saw her condition. Her surgical incision was infected, her body racked with a 103°F fever born from starvation, stress, and untreated physical trauma.

"Who did this to her?" the attending physician asked, his eyes burning with anger as he reviewed her vitals. "She’s severely malnourished, dehydrating, and sepsis was hours away. And this baby is showing early signs of hypothermia."

"My family," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "They took the money meant for her care, locked up the supplies, and left her to die."

While the medical staff pumped IV fluids into Maya and placed little Liam into a heated incubator, I sat in the dim waiting room with my laptop on my knees. My mind was a furnace of silent rage. Years ago, when I first started my engineering firm, I had installed discreet, motion-activated security cameras throughout our Park Slope apartment—not out of paranoia, but to safeguard my equipment. My mother and sister had completely forgotten they existed.

I logged into the cloud archive and set the timeline back seven days, right after I had boarded my flight to Germany.

What I saw on the screen made my blood run cold.

The footage from December 26 showed my mother, Eleanor, casually strolling into our living room, tossing the expensive prescription baby formula into a black trash bag. My sister Chloe and her husband Mark followed right behind her, laughing as they went through our refrigerator, packing our gourmet food, prime meats, and organic produce into cooler chests.

"Look at all this luxury," Chloe mocked on the audio recording, holding up a tin of caviar I’d bought for Maya's post-birth recovery. "David spoils this pathetic orphan like she’s royalty. She doesn't deserve any of this."

"Leave her the instant noodles," Eleanor barked with a sneer. "It’s more than enough for someone like her. She’s just a gold-digger who trapped my son with a baby. If she starves a little, she’ll learn her place."

The video then showed Mark confiscating Maya's phone, locking it inside a wall safe, and handing her a plastic cup of lukewarm water before locking the pantry. Maya was sobbing on the couch, clutching her bleeding abdomen, begging them to at least leave the formula for Liam. Chloe snapped her fingers in Maya’s face, threatening to call Child Protective Services and frame her as an unfit mother if she dared to make a sound.

My hands trembled as I downloaded every single byte of footage onto three separate encrypted drives. Every cruel laugh, every theft, every moment of torment was captured in crisp 4K audio and video. They hadn't just abandoned my wife and child; they had systematically abused and starved them while embezzling the funds I provided.

I backed up the files to a secure server and dialed my attorney, Arthur Vance.

"Arthur," I said, my voice chillingly steady. "I need a restraining order, an emergency police report for grand larceny and felony elder and child endangerment, and a full freeze on all family trusts. Tonight."
