Chapter 3 - Cold Hard Evidence

By morning, Maya’s fever had finally broken. She lay in the private hospital room, looking fragile but vastly better than the night before. Liam was fast asleep in a crib beside her bed, his cheeks pink and warm.

I sat beside her, holding her hand, kissing her knuckles repeatedly to assure her that the nightmare was over.

"David..." she whispered, tears glistening in her eyes. "Where are they? Are they going to hurt us again?"

"They will never touch you or Liam ever again, my love," I promised her. "I know everything. I saw the camera footage."

Maya gasped, covering her face with her hands. "I’m so sorry... I tried to be a good daughter-in-law. I wanted them to like me..."

"Maya, look at me," I said gently, cupping her face. "You did nothing wrong. They are monsters. And I promise you on my life, they are going to pay for every second of suffering they put you through."

There was a soft knock at the door, and Detective Miller of the NYPD precinct stepped inside, accompanied by my attorney, Arthur Vance.

"Mr. Sterling," Detective Miller said, pulling out a notepad. "We reviewed the video files you sent over at midnight. I've been a detective for eighteen years, and I’ve rarely seen such blatant, premeditated cruelty. Leaving a post-op mother and an eleven-day-old infant in freezing temperatures without food or medication constitutes clear reckless endangerment and third-degree assault."

Arthur opened his briefcase and pulled out a stack of financial documents. "David, we’ve tracked the $14,000 you wired for Maya’s recovery care. Within two hours of the transfer, Eleanor transferred $10,000 directly into Chloe’s personal trading account, and used the remaining $4,000 to purchase first-class tickets to Miami."

"That’s grand larceny," Detective Miller confirmed. "Florida authorities are currently processing their extradition back to New York. They’ll be arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court by Tuesday."

Maya began to weep, but this time they were tears of relief. The invisible cage they had trapped her in was finally shattering into pieces.
