Chapter 10 - A Year Later - Peace Restored

On New Year's Eve, exactly one year after the night that changed everything, our Brooklyn Heights brownstone was filled with warmth, music, and light.
The kitchen was brimming with delicious food—a feast of roasted duck, fresh organic fruits, handmade pasta, and beautiful desserts. But there were no uninvited guests, no toxic demands, and no hidden cruelty.
Instead, the house was filled with real love. Maya’s long-lost maternal aunt and uncle, whom we had reconnected with earlier in the year, had flown in to celebrate with us, alongside our close friends and colleagues who had supported us through the dark times.
Liam, now a happy, energetic one-year-old taking his very first toddling steps across the hardwood floor, squealed with delight as he reached for a colorful toy train.
At 11:30 PM—the exact minute I had unlocked the door to a dark, freezing apartment one year prior—I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading out to our private garden. The Manhattan skyline sparkled across the river, ready to explode with New Year's fireworks.
Maya walked up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist and resting her head against my back. I turned around, pulling her close into my chest, kissing her forehead.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.
"I was just thinking about how close I came to losing everything," I admitted, my voice thick with emotion. "If I hadn't swapped that flight... if I had stayed in Germany..."
Maya reached up, gently touching my face, looking straight into my eyes with unwavering love and strength.
"You didn't stay, David. You came home. You fought for us, you protected us, and you gave us a life where we can finally breathe."

Outside, the clock struck midnight. The sky erupted in a brilliant display of gold, silver, and blue fireworks, illuminating the room in radiant light.
In the middle of the warm, laughter-filled living room, I held my wife and son close to my heart. The past was healed, justice was served, and our true future had finally begun.
