Chapter 7 - The Arrests and Arraignment

The day of the formal criminal arraignment arrived at the Manhattan Criminal Court. The weather was gray and rainy, perfectly matching the mood inside the courtroom.

Eleanor, Chloe, and Mark sat at the defense table, dressed in plain, unglamorous clothes provided by their public defenders—their private defense attorneys had dropped them after realizing they had no money left to pay retainer fees.

Maya and I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Arthur Vance and two security officers. Maya wore a crisp tailored suit, looking poised, strong, and beautiful. Her hand was wrapped tightly in mine.

The judge, Honorable Maria Reyes, was known for her zero-tolerance policy toward domestic abuse and financial exploitation. She read through the grand jury indictment with a look of visible disgust.

"Eleanor Sterling, Chloe Sterling, and Mark Davis," Judge Reyes began, her voice ringing sharply through the courtroom. "The evidence presented before this court—including high-definition surveillance footage, financial transfer logs, and medical records—presents a harrowing picture of calculated cruelty, financial fraud, and endangerment of a vulnerable post-operative mother and a infant child."

The defense attorney attempted to intervene. "Your Honor, my clients were under immense stress, and there was a misunderstanding regarding the care schedule—"

"Silence, counsel," Judge Reyes cut him off with a slice of her hand. "A misunderstanding does not involve locking food away, confiscating a phone, leaving a bleeding woman with wallpaper paste, and spending fourteen thousand stolen dollars at a Miami beach resort."

The judge slammed her gavel down hard.

"Bail is revoked. The defendants will be remanded into custody pending trial. A permanent, nationwide order of protection is hereby issued in favor of Maya Sterling and Liam Sterling. Should any defendant attempt contact directly or through third parties, they will face immediate maximum sentencing."

Gasps erupted from the gallery. Eleanor collapsed into her seat, bursting into hysterical tears as court officers stepped forward to put handcuffs on her wrists. Chloe screamed at Mark, blaming him for everything, while Mark buried his face in his hands, trembling uncontrollably.

As they were led away through the side door to the holding cells, Eleanor locked eyes with me. She mouthed the word, "Please..."

I didn't blink. I simply turned away, putting my arm around my wife as we walked out into the fresh New York air.
