Chapter 9 - The Final Collapse

Richard stood frozen, lowering his weapon as the smoke cleared and the humming blue light slowly receded into the floorboards. He looked at his sister, whose eyes were glowing with a fierce, radiant vitality, and then down at the boy who had brought them through the fire.
"Evelyn... your legs," Richard breathed.
"They aren't broken anymore, Richard," Evelyn said, her voice steady and powerful. She took three firm, confident steps forward across the ruined floor, completely unassisted. "They never were. We just forgot our own strength."
"Come on," Toby said, looking toward the shattered balcony doors. "It’s over."
They walked out onto the snowy, rain-slicked roof of the portico. Marcus Sterling lay sprawled near the edge of the slate tiles, coughing up blood, his tailored suit ruined, his empire lying in literal and figurative ruins around him.
Sirens began to wail in the distance—not the private security of the Syndicate, but federal law enforcement and investigative units that Toby had managed to alert using an encrypted emergency broadcast before they even crossed the river. The global conspiracy was finally crumbling into the light of day.
Sterling looked up, his face twisted in bitter hatred as he stared at Evelyn and Toby. "You... you think you've won? The board... there are others. The bloodline will never be safe."
Toby stepped over the shattered glass and knelt beside the fallen chairman. He didn't look angry; he looked profoundly peaceful.

"The bloodline isn't a weapon for you to control, Sterling," Toby said quietly. "It belongs to the future. And the future doesn't need people like you in it."
Within minutes, federal helicopters circled overhead, casting blinding searchlights across the estate. Tactical units swarmed the grounds, securing the perimeter and placing the surviving Syndicate loyalists under arrest. Marcus Sterling was hauled away in handcuffs, his decades-long reign of shadows brought to an absolute and permanent end.
