Chapter 7 - The Ancestral Trap

The SUV rolled across the cracked cobblestone courtyard and parked beneath the grand, shadowy portico of the mansion.
Richard unholstered a sleek, polymer-framed sidearm he had retrieved from the vehicle’s tactical compartment, checking the magazine with a practiced click. He looked back at Evelyn and Toby. "Stay close behind me. The moment we step inside, assume every corridor is compromised."
They stepped out into the biting, rain-slicked air. Toby’s bare feet touched the cold stone without flinching, the small cuts completely healed by the accelerated regeneration of his bloodline.
Richard pushed open the heavy oak double doors of the mansion. The interior was a cathedral of dust and memory. Moonlight filtered through the shattered glass of the grand cupola overhead, casting pale beams across sweeping staircases and ruined velvet drapery.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them with a deafening bang, echoing through the empty halls.
"Welcome home, Richard," a voice echoed from the shadows above.
From the second-floor balcony, a tall silhouette stepped into the moonlight. It was Marcus Sterling, the ruthless chairman of the Syndicate’s board and the man who had secretly engineered the corporate takeover of Vance Enterprises decades ago. He wore an immaculate charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly combed, a cold, predatory smile playing on his lips.
"Sterling," Richard spat, raising his weapon. "You're finished. We have the ledger drives. We have the confessions. The entire board's crimes are exposed."
Sterling let out a low, amused chuckle. "Exposed to whom, Richard? The courts? The police? Do you really believe the institutions you built your wealth on aren't entirely owned by us? The moment you stepped foot across this river, your data feeds were intercepted. Those drives you brought with you? They're wiping themselves clean right now."
Richard frantically checked his tablet. The screen flickered violently before going completely black. Error: Data Stream Corrupted.
"You brought us here for the drives," Toby said, his voice ringing clearly through the cavernous hall as he stepped out from behind Richard. He looked up at Sterling with eyes devoid of fear. "You didn't want the evidence destroyed. You wanted the last living carriers of the bloodline in one place so you could finish what our grandfather started."
Sterling’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, calculating intensity as he stared down at the boy. "Ah, the miraculous grandson. Clara’s bloodline refuses to die out. It’s almost poetic. But magic and cellular regeneration won't stop high-velocity lead."

Sterling snapped his fingers.
From the darkened corridors flanking the grand staircase, a dozen heavily armed mercenaries stepped into view, their assault rifles raised, lasers painting red dots across the room.
