Chapter 8 - The Awakening Surge

"Don't move," Sterling commanded, leaning over the balcony railing. "Kill the adults, but bring the boy to me alive. I want to study how his cells defy cellular decay."
The mercenaries raised their weapons, fingers tightening on the triggers.
In that fraction of a second, Evelyn stepped forward.
Before Richard could shout a warning, Evelyn closed her eyes and took a deep, steady breath. She didn't cower. Instead, she raised both hands toward the stone floor beneath her feet, opening her palms just as Toby had done in the ballroom days ago.
A blinding flash of cobalt-blue light erupted from beneath her shoes, racing across the cobblestone foundation like a living pulse of lightning.
CRACK-BOOM!
The bio-electric shockwave struck the foundational pillars of the mansion with terrifying kinetic force. The floor violently buckled, sending shockwaves through the room that knocked the mercenaries off balance. Their rifles discharged harmlessly into the vaulted ceiling as they tumbled backward over the marble railings.
Sterling staggered, grabbing the balcony rail to keep from falling. "What... what is this sorcery?!"
"It's not sorcery," Toby whispered, his voice echoing with ancient power as he joined Evelyn, placing his hands against hers. "It's a legacy you could never control."

Together, the boy and the woman unleashed a second, more powerful wave of energy. The shockwave surged up the grand staircase like a tidal wave of light, shattering the wooden banisters, short-circuiting every tactical weapon in the room, and slamming directly into Sterling’s chest.
The corrupt chairman was thrown backward through the stained-glass window of his second-floor office, crashing onto the exterior roof in a heap of broken glass and shattered pride.
