Chapter 6 - Shadows Over the Ridge

The rain fell in sheets across the dilapidated rooftops of the Ridge, washing the grime of the industrial slums into the overflowing gutters. Decades ago, this side of the river had been the beating heart of the city’s manufacturing boom. Now, it was a forgotten wasteland of rusted iron skeletons, abandoned warehouses, and narrow alleys where the law of the land was written in blood and silence.
A sleek, matte-black armored SUV bearing Vance Global plates cut through the dismal downpour, its high-beam headlights slicing through the gray gloom.
Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was dense with tension. Richard sat in the passenger seat, his eyes locked on a military-grade tablet tracking encrypted data feeds. In the back seat, Evelyn sat upright, her hands resting calmly in her lap. The lingering ache in her legs had faded into a steady, humming warmth—the dormant bio-electric resonance of her bloodline fully waking up.
Beside her, Toby stared out the rain-streaked window, watching the familiar crumbling brick walls of the district where he had grown up.
"The perimeter sensors are active," Richard muttered, tapping the tablet screen. "The Syndicate knows we crossed the river. Every security checkpoint within a three-mile radius of the old estate has just gone offline. They’re funneling us in."
"They aren't funneling us in," Toby said quietly, his voice carrying an eerie calmness. "They’re waiting for us. They think they can trap the bloodline here and wipe it out in one clean sweep."
"They're underestimating us," Evelyn replied, her voice steady and resolved. She reached out, resting a hand gently on Toby’s shoulder. "We didn't survive twelve years of lies just to walk into a slaughterhouse."

The SUV slowed to a halt before a massive, rusted iron gate choked with thick ivy. Beyond it stood the sprawling, gothic silhouette of the ancestral Vance estate—a decaying mansion that had been boarded up and abandoned the night Elena Vance was cast out twenty-five years ago.
Before Richard could give an order, the iron gates swung open on screaming, ungreased hinges, inviting them into the courtyard like a pair of iron jaws closing shut.
